Yes indeed. If one examines our previous performances in this particular competition under Hodgson it becomes pretty apparent that it has been decided that our priorities lay elsewhere. However, one must make it look as though one is trying, and have the handy book of excuses ready, just in case.

didn't learn anything there that we didn't already know

Henderson gets injured a lot
Holding is /will be way down the pecking order
Full backs not good enough in the system we play that leaves them exposed to the switch in play
JRS not ready
Riedwald is decent with the ball but not so good without it
Women commentators make me turn the volume off
We still need a striker
Eze is the only player that lights us up
Other regulars that played looked bored
Man utd second string is better than ours

Hopfully will give a better account of ourselves on Saturday and pass the ball forward a few times more than we did tonight

COYP

A good summary.
In terms of Saturday, not only do we need to pass the ball forward we need to do it at speed. The slow build up never goes anywhere.

Early in the game Mateta won a free kick in their half - we took it short and it went back to the goalie. I thought free kicks were an attacking opportunity. Ridiculous

I’d just turned round to my daughter a minute before and said he won’t bring Eze on now, he won’t risk him now the games gone. So that one baffled me as well.

I *think* the point there was to give Eze (our only game-changing player) the chance to play a bit against MU in preparation for Saturday. Just to find his feet between the MU lines and measure up against Casemiro (who will most likely play Saturday).

As many have pointed out the lessons were already known.

What's so disappointing to me is the subs and squad management. With the context of Roy saying we didnt have the squad to give it a proper go he then went on to:

Haul JRS of at HT, embarrassing that lad and likely killing his confidence

Decided at 3 nil, when the game was already lost to risk 2 of the players that he'd wanted to protect

Only gave Ozoh 10 mins

Didnt bother bringing Ebiowei on at all

And as a result Ayew, JPM (our only striker) and Mitchell (our only LB) played 90mins and will all start at the weekend

I'm genuinely at a loss

hopefully we'll play Edouard on Saturday not JPM - unless Edouard is injured/suspended? if so, yikes.

Not expecting Edouard for a couple of weeks - injury. So here goes within the context of a poor performance I didn't think JPM was that bad. Made the keeper save twice.

Is how I see it. But...

Roy would not have been pleased with the number of goals conceded or the number of new players injured. 9 now in the treatment room and it's only September.

It's Royball damage limitation till Christmas.

Not looking forward to Saturday. Odds on empty handed result.
To win games we are going to need ALL our best players fully fit and all being on the pitch regularly. At the moment we are not even close to that.
It is nobody's fault, just a fact that we have unfortunately got a lot of injured players just now.
We haven't got a squad of premier players. So when half a dozen of our best players are down and/or playing when not fully fit, then we will suffer. Like last night.
Im not expecting any different on Saturday.

Are you saying that his performance was embarrassing, or that by playing him we were opening him up to embarrassment?
I just thought he was way out of depth. He isn't a kid in footballing terms, he is 20. He is just miles off PL quality. However, needs must. He isn't much worse that Riedewald, if at all.

I won't bet on winning points this week, but with Guehi, Andersen, Mitchell, Ward (...), and Johnstone at the back, I think we have a chance of earning a clean sheet or holding Man U to a single goal. From that, I take hope that yesterday's match says nothing about our prospects on the weekend.

You can pick over the bones of this game all you like, but the reasons why it played out and ended as it did have to be obvious. What passes for our second string ,is in the most part well short of where it should be. The Plymouth game proved that,,
We do have a decent first 15 but then it falls off a cliff. The problem being we have three or four injuries to the 15 any more and it really is scrapping the barrel.
Blame who you like but that team last night couldn’t get out of its own half because it just wasn’t good enough. Proof as at Plymouth was the introduction of members of the 15, on this occasion Hugh’s, and Ebbs, two of the 15 and a team with no teeth at least created some attempts on the United goal. A few more injuries and it could get tricky.

A nice outlook on things CT. kudos and may bring the more dramatically and panic inclined of us back from the brink of nervous capitulation, worked a bit for me at least

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
