Putting aside the obvious that we're ninth in the league by beating Man Utd at Old Trafford (to the annoyance it would seem of some of the people on here) with a side that isn't at full strength by a long shot, been in the prem for ten years, aren't saddled with a sh!t ton of debt and have managed to do that without the deep pockets of Chelsea, Newcastle et al, seriously what is the issue here?

Do we need a new striker, right back and more depth in the squad, yes absolutely. Do we have the money to do this, no we don't so what exactly do you expect Parish to do about this? He can't force Textor and the yanks to put money in, he hasn't got the personal wealth to do that, and like it or not, this isn't Fifa or whatever it's called now on the PlayStation, where you just buy a player and that's that. For whatever reason, deals don't always come off, other clubs sneak in (Chelsea has basically tried to buy everyone in the league) and players/agents can demand exorbitant fees, just look at some of the prices paid out in the last transfer window!

Some of you need to get a grip, until someone comes in with a billion in the bank and a desire to build the club up, we are what we are, we're at the financial level that we're at, and having a chairman with pie in the sky ideas and no way to do it has landed us in administration twice.

And to say Roy has no opinion on who the club signs is absolutely ludicrous. I'm sure he's not always got his first choice, but to imply he knows nothing about it is just silly.

I was very much under the impression the thread starter was either a troll or lobotomy patient. He’s got a fair few pages out of everybody however

Made me chuckle, that did. I remember back in the day saying that someone (at school or scouts or somewhere) who'd done or said something dumb "must have had a brainectomy". That drew a mild ripple of laughter too!

Without wishing to get to carried away, if Olise is fit for the Newcastle game and Franca is half decent and we dont get to many injuries and bring 1 or 2 in Jan, who knows where we can finish, i know there are a of "ands" in my post, but fingers crossed.

Agree with a lot of what you say, however, when you have a limited transfer budget and you spend over £40m of it on a goalie on massive wages and a unproven 19 year old Brazilian who is carrying an injury i think supporters have the right to say WTF. I cannot see either having much playing time this season - although accept both are good long term signings.

I think there was some logic in using Ayew to cover for Olise for a limited period, however, not having another LW option is the squad is almost criminal. Jeff Schlupp whilst a left sided player is a midfielder and not a winger, so at best he is cover in that position.

As for LB and RB we have muddled through for a few years now so at some point we need to decide if we have a youngster(s) from the academy who can step up or go to market. We seem to be doing neither.

I think that sums up the lens through which I and dare I suggest others view it P99.

I would caveat that however by saying it looks, looks as though punts have been taken on ROI for these players with a nod to longer term stability financially if not in footballing terms (thought the latter would have to materialise for the former to also).

My guess, which again is only a guess, is that rather than splashing the cash on more Bentekes and Sakhos (which drew much criticism from fans) the longer term investments in players has become the secondary priority after PL survival, which perhaps correctly (thus far) the board have assumed was assured for this season at least, with the current squad and Roy at the helm.

The end result of this is most likely sustained existence within the PL at the cost of one big push for something spectacular. This can grate short term and will peak at certain times (losses) but longer term will be deemed as the correct call.

My other guess is that the need for full backs and wingers is not one the powers that be are completely ignorant of but the deals for Henderson and Franca were available and the aforementioned were not.

Theories of incompetence and ignorance may well continue to be prevalent and perhaps not completely devoid of merit but I do trust Parish and co., even if my analysis from a footballing perspective is not always mirrored in their actions.

While i don't agree with all the criticism of Parish I do think he is part of our problems.
I think we all feel that we need to invest if we are to progress as others have said Parish does not have money to do this on his own so we have the american investors. They are reluctant to put their hands in their pockets. The Question is why? It is rumoured that 2 want out but can't find a buyer. Parish it appears wishes to remain as chairman and this i think restricts the number of potential buyersand hence future investment.
Parish is also very hands on which is a double edged sword. As he is also a supporter he has interests of club at heart so in some ways this is understandable. However does it make recruiting a new manager when Roy retires more difficult? None of us know how much input managers have had in recruiting new players but we have seen players arrive and be sparingly used (at best), this suggests to me that they are not managers first choice

You've got a valid point, but I think we've been forced into signing a goalie. When Guaita went into a flounce and refused to play whilst publically stating he wanted to leave, we had to look at someone who could cover and challenge Johnstone for the no.1 spot, as it would seem that Matthews and Whitworth are not up to prem level at the moment. For a pre-level goalie it's going to cost, but let's hope he turns out to not be another long-term resident of the treatment room.

With Franca, hopefully, he'll be everything that people say he will be and an exciting addition to the squad. He should add an attacking option to both wings (maybe alleviating the need to have Schlupp on the wing?) and the midfield in general, so could be a very useful player to have tactically as well.

Having to unexpectantly bring in a new goalie must have affected the plans and this is pure speculation, but perhaps the plan was to bring in someone who can add to the attack following Wilf going and then a striker, but to then have to divert some of the transfer budget to a goalie might of affected who we could look at and cut us short of what we needed to sign someone who could do the job.

Who knows, but the budget is the budget at the end of the day.

The trouble with computers, of course, is that they're very sophisticated idiots

There’s being careful with spending then there is being tight and riding your luck. Let’s be honest most managers would have told parish to f*** of. The only reason we have a manager is because Hodgson is a yes man and doesn’t want to let the club down. Our squad is threadbare and to have this small of a squad with no depth or even a bench to turn to is embarrassing for how long we have been in the prem. But then again a lot of you want to suck parish c*** on here it’s well known.

Victor Camarasa had an excellent season with Cardiff before joining us on loan whereupon he didn't even manage one minute on the pitch which seems to imply that the manager didn't want him

This. Some fans have become so deluded in the belief that we should be like The Weed and having a divine right to be in the top half and winning every single week. Remember Leeds? They couldn’t sustain their success and suffered for it. Another spell in admin is NOT what we need just because a few entitled fans are whinging.
