I watched Royís press conference and felt he was unduly harsh on the young players who came on.
The experienced players also didnít play well after Spurs went two up and I thought the heads dropped until the brief rally at the end.
Why single out the youngsters?
At a more fundamental level itís a failure of the club as by rights Rak Saki should be on loan at a Championship club , but our failure to recruit means heís a bench warmer thrown on in games often when weíre behind in games and expected to be the game changer.
Ahamada is also only used when we fall behind.

What was evident to me yesterday was the lack of speed and energy in our team.
Hughes tries hard but hasnít got the legs to play attacking midfield as he did yesterday.
I think to an extent Schluppís legs have gone and he seems unable to provide the thrust and make those driving runs which he did in the past.
Perhaps a case of age and injuries catching up.

With regard to Roy, heís fine in terms of setting up a structure to contain teams , but once we fall behind he struggles.
His conservative instincts mean he worries about pushing forward and then going two goals down.
However, staying with the same pattern of play means youíve no chance of equalising.
He doesnít seem to have cracked this conundrum.
Iím not being too critical for him.
Without Olise, Eze and Zaha itís necessary to have some realism about our lack of attacking threat.

Agreed. At least we gave it a go for some of the game unlike last week where we just didnít turn up. Desperately need a few positives like Olise &/or Eze coming back.

Thoughtful and fair analysis Patrick.

For my part I really worry that what Roy said about the youngsters actually represents an underlying distrust of youth and also what message it sends them. If he - or the club generally - can't work out how to integrate promising but raw young talent into the squad what an earth is the point of the academy or buying in someone like Franca? They should be the future of the club and they need nurturing and support, not unconstructive criticism.

I hope Roy sits down with them on Monday and makes good any damage or otherwise we could lose them.

Disgraceful undermining any player it leads to disharmony in the squad & tends to Ďrollercoasterí.
Did not expect us to beat Spurs, however if we had some sort of an attack we would have won the game in the first half.
Blame the board, not Hodgson.
Both wing backs are not good enough, especially Ward.
The Midfield 3 are gritty & hardworking however are all CDMís with no flair.
Palace should not have gone into the season relying on 2 players. Eze has been injured 3 times in 3 seasons, so I would hazard a guess will be plagued with injury in the future.
Will Olise return as before with after such an injury ?
Our best 3 players are the 2 centre backs & Goalkeeper. I suspect both CBís will leave at the end of the season no matter how hard we try to keep them as they are probably the best in the league. Why stay at a club that seems to have no ambition & looks like we are just trying to stay in the division so the new stand can be built.
Iím disillusioned as previous writers. There is a long term vision, however you need to keep sight of the short term as well, otherwise we could find ourselves in the championship.
Need points in the next few games as the December fixtures are extremely difficult even if Eze & Olise are back.
Rant over!

All teams have injuries.
Roy's answer is to double down and play even more negatively. And, when the opposition take the lead, do nothing because there's no contingency plan beyond holding for a 0-0. Start every game with players past their prime, leave subs too late, and lambast the substitutions for not rescuing the game that the past it players had lost.
A true professional, and never Roy's fault. We need to move on from this. I can envisage a time soon when our most gifted players will be thinking about a career elsewhere, as there's not much to be had with mere survival tactics playing negative football. And then it's back to square one. Of course this is the conundrum Parish has to seriously think about if he wishes to fill his 34000 seater stadium.

I wonder how many of the posters who in the run-up to the match said that they'd "bite your arm off for 0-0" are the same who are now bitterly compaining that Roy set the team up for a 0-0 draw, lacks ambition, etc., etc.

I'm certainly one of those arm biters, and I'm disappointed we didn't get the 0-0, but we gave it a very good go in the first half. Nobody has mentioned what seemed clear to me, that the Spurs players looked after the interval as if they'd had something unpleasant rammed up their posteriors. Son in particular was racing about like the proverbial blue-arsed fly. Under pressure from a very classy side, own goals happen.

I think it is very hard for any player to make an impact as an attacking player, and even harder for the younger players, JRS, Franca and Ahamada should start against start against Burnley, so we can see if when everyone is starting cold they perform

------Ayew
Franca-Ahamada-JRS

We are not losing much dropping Hughes, Schlupp and Edouard, they will be on the bench if needed.

Lots of .Roy this, Roy that , Roy should have talk. But personally I donít think he has any reason to feel overly excited by the young players on our bench. I get the feeling he knows this is his swan song, so why not confirm what he actually thinks.
We held Spurs very well until the own goal, only because of Royís tactics, with more quality we could have scored and possibly beaten them, but we donít have that quality right now, it was there for all to see on three or four occasions. A forward line with Olise, Eze, and dare I say Wilf, could have won that game under Hodgson.
No matter how Hodgson voices it , our young substitutes are not good enough to improve us in most games. Spurs bring on the full armoury of international talent, as all the top half sides can do ,we bring on three kids trying to make their way in the game, and a has been to try and rescue a lost cause. Maybe he chose some wrong words, but he must be frustrated by the situation.
For me when it comes to wanting to compete in this league the young players are not good enough, certainly yet, and thatís what Hodgson is actually saying. Not to say they couldnít be but more work needs doing away from the pressure of games like the last two..
In the over all losing to a good Spurs side is not the end of the world, what worries me is that without Eze, and Olise , we donít look like we can score often enough to beat many top half sides . Outside of some clever stuff from Ayew, the rest were pedestrian , hard to know how a manager can alter that.

It doesn't take long for the mob to start whining about Roy Hodgson.

He was right about our subs. Rak Saki is lightweight and I hope Franca was suffering first night nerves because he was appalling.

The fact is that we are suffering, as usual, from a lack of signings.

Our forwards are bang average, Joel Ward is 5 seasons past the point where we should have replaced him, we have no proper cover for Mitchell, and without Olise and Eze we are incapable of producing sustained pressure or have any pace or creativity at all in the midfield.

The squad cannot cope with injuries to key players, and Roy cannot be blamed for that. I do feel that he should have made substitutions after we went behind, but judging by the contribution from the subs, it would have made no difference anyway.
The bigger picture is that with players coming back, we be a lot better, but we do need to sign a left and right back and a striker.
For how many more windows will we be saying that?

I agree with Roy, rak sakyi is terrible, I dont know what people see when they watch him but he's nowhere near this level, send him on loan to the championship to continue to develop.

If this is the case why then did the club spend up to £25m on a relatively untried young Brazilian? How does the club expect Franca to exhibit his potential? I was thinking that Franca would be a starter pretty soon, but Roy has always shown preference to his favourites, and increasingly favourite duffers. Certainly Schlupp no longer brings anything to the party , and as for Ward, he's been Championship material for at least two seasons. Both are guaranteed starters under Roy. Up front Roy still gives Mateta the occasional game, despite him being total pony poo.
Easy to blame the subs, but Roy picks the team and devises the increasingly negative tactics. It really is like Groundhog Day round here.
