I mentioned those other players in response to your suggestion that Wharton is miles above that standard, which he clearly isn't.

We're not going to get relegated because Wharton plays a game for the U21s. That you don't watch it or find it important doesn't mean that's true of everyone else.

I'd also imagine it's a source of pride for Wharton himself, and if we as his club were to prevent him from playing, I can't imagine that would be a very popular decision... neither with Wharton himself nor with other talented kids who might be considering joining us in the future.

It's still missing the point that in our position, at this stage of the season, we can't afford an injury to him in a needless U21S game. It's just the reality of where we are. If he's in a team with a much bigger squad then fair enough. He's in our first eleven - not underage, or coming on as a sub. And our cover for him is not at a similar standard, or anywhere near.
As for U21s, I've watched football my entire life and may have watched two U21s games. I don't really know of anyone who particularly follows it.

I don't know if it is - you can get us at 30/1 to go down now... it's really rather unlikely at this stage.

Even if it were, we won't get anywhere dictating to talented players whether they're allowed to represent their country - I think that's quite clearly a bad idea.

Assuming nobody gets there before me, I agree with AS's sentiment but also EDN for the reality of the situation.

I'd rather not risk Wharton at all and would be very worried if we lost him to U'21 duty. On the other hand, it will be great for his development, his confidence too, and I don't think we can nor should be able to veto his decision to represent this country, at any level.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Totally agree. It’s a pretty negative selling point to a future signing - if you’re good enough to represent your country well forget it as we won’t let you play.

Is it just me or does anybody else find it madness that they shoe horn in international friendlies just as teams are in the meat of the season. Half the players are fighting for titles or champions league and some fighting for there league survival.

We’ve now likely lost our best keeper. Genius.

You couldn’t make this s*** up

Why not play qualifiers at the end of a season when there is no tournament, like a mini qualifying tournament. We would all be interested then. The season could finish earlier as we wouldn’t have to stop in sept, oct, nov and march for pointless games. Meaning players would actually get a break before back to training pre season.

Total waste of time. They may as well have finished the season 2 weeks earlier and then they could play some meaningful warm up games before the euros

It's one or two matches whilst our squad is depleted and we need all hands on deck. It's not a policy that I'm asking us to take up in future. In this case, club comes first. As it clearly has for many of the players in teams above us for even the full England squad - let alone U21s.

Been saying this for a while. 3 or 4 breaks before Christmas completely mucking up the domestic season.

They don't have to reduce the games just reduce the breaks. Let them have time off around Jan and Feb to coincide with AFCON.

Yep ,with players of all nationalities playing all over the world the international calendar needs to be the same for everyone . Would make complete sense to have a winter break from league matches to allow for all the international comps and then again in the summer .
This latest one has been elongated by Cup fixtures but all the same having no game for 2 weeks in March and then having 4 in the two weeks when we resume is madness

And we still need a striker

Total dross ... the English FA couldn't organise kicking a tin can down the road and now thanks to them we have yet another injury to a vital player at a critical time in the season. "Three lions"??? Change that to "umpteen pussy cats".

Back to the drawing board.

The season stop-starts and the matches too.

We would also like to know what version of the handball and off-side laws are current.

The more they mess, the worse it is.

You can be offside when the ball is played and score - you're not interfering with play. Hand ball is for when a big team is going to need a penalty.
It's pretty much at the will of the ref on the day - so a bit like it always was for us. The rules only apply for certain teams at certain times - other teams needn't worry at other times. So again, a bit like it always was but slower and more controversial since we have VAR.
The convoluted explanations from Ref Watch clear it all up. Apparently the ref was right all along in spite of the inconvenience of the actual rules - which are apparently all subjective - so we are where we are.
I hope this helps clear up such matters.

Best thing about the internationals so far - Lewis Dunk has just put a massive dent in any chance he had of going to the Euros.
