and until England produce ball keeping midfielders, who can pass and move without breaking a sweat and don't panic in possession, we will struggle to win anything

None of the midfielders we went with (probably bar wharton, but he is unproven at this level) could dominate or control a game.

And this has been the story of England since the 80s

Maybe at the moment, but I could see Mainoo and Wharton making a superb partnership which does exactly that in two years. As big an issue this time around was the movement from the forwards. At times I felt a bit sorry for Rice and TAA in particular: they had very few options and got closed down.

He did well, to say otherwise isn't a fair reflection, when compared to some of the s***e mangers before him.
Its odd but to me Sundays final didn't have the same anticipation or pre-match excitement as Italia 90 semi-final, probably because we have got used to doing quite well recently. In 1990 we really were somewhere we hadn't been before in a generation, and we had a team that genuinely could have done it. I'm glad we take penalties a lot better now than we did then!

He doesn’t need a job, he earned over £40m during his period as England manager. My guess he will join the pundit circuit.

Perhaps the FA should recruit him ... he knows the ropes and appreciates shortcomings of the England manager's role. Is there anyone better to oversee the new set up?

GS is a nice bloke. His players like him. I’m not sure great managers are particularly nice.
His record on paper looks good. Delve a little deeper and the draws have been very favourable. What happens is that when we meet a decent quality side we lose.

GS has never assembled a “great” team.

In this last competition he played men out of position all over the park.

Repeatedly our back four passed it amongst themselves and the keeper because men weren't finding space or were hiding. we led the tournament on back passes by a mile.
No surprize at all that we lost to Spain who were good but not invincible.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

France, Spain and Italy. The teams who we got beaten by in 2 finals and a semi.
Pretty much backs up your decent team bit .

It's been posted before but, once more, England lost 3 out of 7 matches at the 2018 World Cup.

But you've completely missed my point - you think after that tournament I was sitting there thinking OMG we didnt beat beligum in 2 dead rubbers.

Diers Penalty against Colombia was one of the best non Palace moments I have had watching a football match - after the pain of watching england lose countless penalty shoot outs.
Beating Germany in 2021 for the first time in a knockout game since 1966 and the euphoria that went with it after a lockdown

Yes in the trophy winning moments he failed with his tactics game management, I am not disputing that one bit.

Yes Gareth will get laboured with 'we always had the easy side of the draw' But in both euros we won our groups - something we failed to do in the previous euros and world cup groups - as they say you make your own luck by winning the groups!

But what he gave most of us, was something that 99% of England fans had never experienced before.

We were penalties away from a trophy, and sunday we went into the 86th minute with the game on a knife edge and still having that hope of actually winning something! Even in 2022 we had the reigning world champions on the ropes (and kane missing the penalty essentially lost us the game)

Yes, he didnt get us across the line, but as a palace fan (we have never won a trophy and only 2016 in my lifetime did we come close) - Yet we have felt that as england fans within the last 5/6 years twice if not 3 times after pretty much 50 years of mediocrity

He has actually put us back on a pedestal that we always thought we were on but probably never were.

Maybe as a palace fan i've just learnt that the moments we create on the pitch are the memories - doesnt always have to be a trophy, and in our case, more often than not it isnt.

We won the ZDS Cup in 1991 beating Everton 4 1 (AET) at Wembley.
I was there and witnessed Neville Southall having aright old strop !

I was only born in 1994 - and also annoyingly now it isn't considering a major trophy!

We won Division One in 94, does that count?

ahaha, wasnt born till June so I doubt it

We could throw in all the play off wins but the point remains just like england since 66, that trophy remains elusive

But as I said, the memories and moments created and that stick with me by Palace and England are the most important thing.

Trophies are over rated anyways

The facts are, He had the best squad in the tournament but played many of the wrong ones. If a manager keeps picking players who refuse to perform (even if they have been brilliant before) he should be sacked and those players never seen again.

I feel that he did a great job behind the scenes arranging the best facilities and accommodation for the players but held them back when it came to the football.
