thats life, well thats what all the people say. by an accident of birth i could have been royalty too, i dont try and break into buckingham palace every day though. The theory is a bit too simplistic, but it sure is funny .. good comparison Would you want to be royalty though, imagine having those relatives

Certain sections of our society would grind to a halt if they weren't run by migrants who are willing to jobs that we aren't. That's too simplistic too .. why wouldn't we find enough of our own to break in, steal, do drugs trafficing etc.. etc...

Total net Immigration from outside the European Union has more than trebled in the past five years and is still rising. Each year nearly a quarter of a million people come to live in Britain. This is the equivalent of the City of Cambridge every six months. Arrivals on this scale make successful assimilation very difficult. Furthermore, between 1996 and 2001 three quarters of international migrants went to London and the South East. This pattern exacerbates the already heavy pressure on transport, housing, education and health service. I'm trying to find the figures now but I am sure that the fiscal contribution of immigrants i.e. how much they contribute to the economy through taxes etc, is vastly more than they take out through benefits etc. I don't want you all to think that I am massively pro immigration, (I do have concerns like most people on here), but it irritates me when people refer to anecdotal bad stories that show asylum seekers etc in a bad light. These things have to be analysed in a calm, forensic manner. Anyway Stef - aren't you Belgian (apols if wrong!)? When your country was used as a car park in 2 world wars I'm pretty sure many of your fellow citizens sought asylum here too escape the murdering hoardes of huns (I could be wrong). Does that not make you sympathise with people who flee wars?

Good to see this thread has not descended into the usual monotonous boring knee jerk posts yet. “Illegal immigrants” are illegal the law does not need changing. Whenever people talk on this site about immigrants/ asylum, you need to differentiate between them the various people who seek to gain entry to this country. Our asylum process does need an overhaul. Believe it or not, it is not that easy to become a British citizen. However people abuse/ get lost in our asylum system. If you apply and are rejected you can keep on appealing for years and you are not immediately deported and will be able to live off benefits. Others have made good points already on this thread about migrant workers who come here legally and have permission to enter before they leave their country.
I have prepared one of my own time capsules. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like. |

I'm not sure if its been said as we've had this debate so many times that I couldn't be bothered reading through the thread but - Making immigration illegal per se is not going to deal with the real problem - illegal immigrants. If an illegal immigrant is caught, he ought to be taken straight to the airport and slung out. None of these retrospective asylum claims - Bogus asylum seekers - throw them out the day the decision's made before they've got a chance to disappear - no lengthy appeals (maybe one short appeal on factual or legal grounds) As far as genuine asylum seekers and economic migrants who have come through legal routes - welcome, come in, and pull up a chair! The argument about migrants out balancing the figures is valid, but will always be slightly skewed by the differential in 'quality' - the people who emigrate from this country will always be those who can get in elsewhere, which tends to mean professionals whose skills are in demand (I'm trying to do it myself, and believe me it's not easy), so you have to be careful to control the skillset of the incoming replacements (obviously that only applies to those applying for legal entry through 'normal' routes rther than asylum seekers).

Dubai has it right: All are welcome (subject to certain restrictions) to come and work. However: 1. if you commit a crime, you are deported; 2. If you seriously offend their religion or customs, deported; 3. If you lose your job, you have one month to find another. Whilst we may have a moral responsibility to give shelter from those fleeing war and persecution, those people who betray that hospitality by committing crimes should be immediately deported.
