Oxford United 1 - 1 Palace

Sat Aug 4 2001 - Friendly

Crystal Palace lost on 5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1 for the Bill Halsey Memorial Trophy, played in Oxford's new Kassam Stadium.

The first real chance of a dull opening half came when Palace took the lead in the 35th minute. Jovan Kirovski fired the away side in front from 10 yards after good work from Clinton Morrison down the right.

Oxford got back in it and Alex Kolinko manged to block a header from a corner and then was on hand to save a low free kick to his left shortly afterwards.

At the other end, Julian Gray had a chance to double the lead when his half volley was defelected away.

Just before half-time, Kolinko saved a one-on-one, but would be disappointed with himself a few minutes later. He charged off his line to punch away an Oxford long throw, completely missed it, and Oxford's Powell was on hand to shoot home for the equaliser.

Morrison had a couple of chances in the second half. First, his chip sailed over the bar and then he had a turn and shot flash past the post.

Jamie Smith, David Hopkin and Steve Kabba were unlucky not to score for the Eagles and the match finished at 1-1, which meant a penalty shoot-out.

Fan Zhiyi put his penalty away, Oxford scored - 1-1. Wayne Carlisle shot wide, Oxford scored - 1-2. Hayden Mullins scored straight down the middle, while Oxford scored - 2-3. Kirovski put his away, while Oxford scored - 3-4. Morrison scored Palace's final pen, and Oxford won the game with the fifth and final penalty - 4-5.
