I know we struggled second half of the season, and struggled to break teams down at home.

But how many times did we say last season, if only we had a decent centre forward we'd have won that game. Or all we need is an ACM player to play that killer pass.

We'll we got that centre forward and really should have bought a good ACM.
When we were winning at the start of last season every player knew their job. Cabaye and macarthur shielded the back 4, punch was the number 10 and we broke quickly down the wings. If we had bought an ACM as well as benteke, could we not have carried on playing 'our way'?

I will look at it another way. The change in style is reaping a lot of rewards in terms of chances/goals.

Hard to legislate for some of the individual errors and basic lack of defending. Pardew still needs to take the brunt of the blame but I wouldn't go after the style. Left back is another major issue. teams are targeting this area!

I loom at it the other way...with benteke up front and a decent ACM, playing our old style....surely that would also have reaped rewards without abandoning our defensive shape.

Pardew has changed it. We try and keep the ball more and don't play purely counter attacking football. problem is by fixing our attack and lack of goals he's f***d the defence...

Has he really. The only way I see we're f***ed is defending set pieces and that has nothing to do with style of play.

Totally agree
Style had nothing to do with bad defending

Keith Millen is more than a tad responsible for our diabolical, disorganized defensive woes and I pray that he is not put in temporary charge when AP is finally sacked this or next weekend, when we inevitable lose.
Hope Parish has arranged for a seamless change of manager to give us a fighting chance of survival.

It does.
The reason we cannot defend anymore is because we do not have enough quality players to play this new style that Pardew is asking of the players. Because the players are being asked to do things they are not capable of the whole team has become disjointed and the defence is being exposed almost immediately that any of our attacks break down.
We cannot match any of the top half of the table clubs when it comes to playing open football, but should be able to rely on discipline and spirit to beat the lower sides, added to any quality we have acquired from 3 seasons in the Premier. Each season you stay in the Premier should allow you to be thought of as an 'established' side and attract a bit more quality , which should allow you eventually play better football at a higher level.
We have not yet reached that level and should be playing football we are comfortable with and aim for mid table comfort until such a time we have the players that will be able to play 'expansive' football.

I know we have given away more goals from set pieces, but would be interesting to know how many corners/free kicks we have given away compared to other seasons. A lot of these because of lack of defensive cover, getting caught out of position, last ditch tackles. Against Swansea we gave away 24 free kicks (almost twice as many as any other premiership team playing saturday) against a team we knew were dangerous ay set pieces. ..

Against Leicester, Burnley and Liverpool our defensive shape from open play was horrendous.
