This post has been merged from a topic called 'Warnock wanted van Dijk for £6m but TimCoe said no' by Midlands Eagle It doesn't really say it all though does it, it doesn't say that we have a very young chief scout who is relatively inexperienced (certainly from a playing perspective) and that he was allowed to overrule a wise old head like Warnock and this instance it has cost the club many millions.

I'm no fan of Warnock but the thing I don't like is that our scouting over the last three years has been rubbish and this might be an example of why.

In van Dijk Warnock saw a young player on the up who he believed would be a good fit for the Premier League. Southampton obviously agreed with that assessment. However Warnock was overruled by 27 year old (at the time) chief scout Tim Coe who had never played the game professionally. That must have irked Warnock and is probably the reason for him mentioning it today. If Coe was exceptionally good at his job and bringing in good value players his lack of experience would not concern me however his track record seems somewhat dubious even before Warnock spilled the beans about van Dijk.
One of the biggest mysteries in life is that loud stupid people normally don't have even the slightest inclination that they are stupid. |

Over-rated and over priced, but Liverpool have a habit of signing Southampton players for some reason. Have any of them worked out? If we had bought him for 6m then that would be ok business, but to by him for 75m. He will be another flop and an expensive one for sure...

I really don't know the specifics so can only speculate and offer a possible scenario as to events at that time. Perhaps Warnock having heard about a promising defender in Scotland steered the scouting team to have a look and they concluded that they could not recommend the player.Warnock then took their word for it on the basis that they knew the player better than he did and no transfer materialised.Perhaps our scouts had a look at Van Dijk a few times and came to the conclusion, accordingly Warnock was happy to take their word for it.

I don't understand why anyone gives a twopenny f*** about this. Obviously no scout is going to rate 100% of players who turn out to be stars (and in any case van Dijk is not better than "very decent" at this point in time IMHO), and obviously no scout is going to fail at some point to recommend a turkey. Players either develop or deteriorate in ways that can't be predicted. Who knew when he scored at Wembley that 2018 would dawn before Puncheon scored another? Who knew that Tekers scoring 15 goals last season would do f*** all in the first half of this? Didn't Swansea - and all the pundits - reckon that their Brazilian signing would more than replace Gylfi Sigurdhsson? S*** happens. All you can do is try to play the probabilities. Big clubs with much better scouting networks have made big mistakes in the past. See United letting Pogba and Wilf go, or Chelsea letting Salah go. I thought at the time he chose Southampton and it wasn't a case of us deciding we didn't want him.
