So large corporate firms are starting to make noises about an en masse phased return to in office working from the beginning of April.

I do wonder what is going to happen to people who for some reason have gone along with the romantic ideal of 'we'll never have to work in an office again' and either sold themselves into that ideal completely or actually sold their flats or houses and moved 3 hours away thinking this scenario would be permanent.

I was baffled at the time with all this moving out for home working nonsense, plus all the sycophantic dross about 'it's here to stay'.

No, no it's not. What is here to stay is more flexibility than ever before over home working, not permanent home working, and that won't apply across every sector. What this has taught me is that for most industries all staff working from home for the majority of the time is actually not as efficient, culturally beneficial or in most cases as professional as it is made out to be.

I would assume prices will switch back somewhat – inner city up, outer city down. It was always going to be a temporary situation... anyone that thought otherwise, well, I'd love to hear their reasoning as to why they thought it would be permanent.

The guy making the largest noise about this return to work managers the Canary Wharf estate so basically he is a landlord. Well he would say that wouldn't he.

I suspect give the choice most people would opt for a 3 day commute staying at home Monday's and Fridays.

Certainly possible, but that still involves a commute – also having WFH for 9 out of the last 12 months I can tell you I have no interest whatsoever in continuing it on a permanent basis.

There are very few jobs that allow for permanent home working. I know Google are allegedly going to have a policy of permanent home work but for most companies, and frankly, staff, I simply don't see it becoming permanent.

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

Ha

No. But it’s the monotony of it that’s doing my nut

The lack of social interaction and post work choice is grating

Wonder, when this is all over, how many people will think prison is such a doddle? Bearing in mind most prisons don’t let you out for a walk whenever you want, eat what you want or order a takeaway or watch Netflix for hours on end or drink as much as you like but do provide a supply of psychopathic thugs to wile away the years,

Nope

Lockdown and the inside of my house is. I’d much rather live here than the suburban borefests of Skaterham and beyond, thanks very much.

Yes I might live somewhere else. But Addiscombe? No ta. Perhaps I’m missing out on all that al fresco dining of chicken wings on the pavements.

Plenty of that in the valley past a certain hour, along with the always delicious sight of smashed up donors down coulsdon road...

Back on topic, the latest early real world data about the vaccines preventing 80% of infection in the older age groups is great, but surely that figure is artificially high considering all the data has been gathered in lockdown? I'd be interested to see the figures when out of lockdown and people are actually mingling without distancing again. Can't think they'll be that high.

And yet the smarter than us French and German maturer age groups aren’t taking the vaccine. We’re meant to be the stupid and ignorant country.

I think people ought to be cautious in demanding a move to WFH post lockdown - as appealing as it may seem. Rendering office jobs worthless is pretty much giving free reign to businesses to outsource the labour abroad at a fraction of the cost. It could potentially put millions of people out of work.

We're the Arthur over ere!
