Jon Williams
Crystal Palace put Premier League Wigan out of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 win at Selhurst Park.
Jon Williams netted his first career goal after Darren Ambrose had given Palace the lead before former Eagles midfielder Ben Watson grabbed a stoppage time consolation for the Latics.
Palace made a bright start and went close to scoring when the impressive Glenn Murray rattled the crossbar with a vicious volley in the 23rd minute.
But seconds later Palace found the net after good work from Wilfried Zaha on the left saw the youngster cross for Ambrose to fire past keeper Ali Al-Habsi.
The Eagles made it 2-0 on the half hour mark as Zaha's delivery from the right was cleared only as far as Williams and the 17-year-old curled his shot into the back of the net.
Just before the break, summer signing Murray almost added a third but his header smacked against the post.
Wigan picked up after the interval with James McCarthy clipping the outside of the post with a half-volley.
Patrick van Aanholt saw a powerful drive cannon off the bar late on before Watson scored with a low effort in injury time after Lewis Price's poor punch fell to him.
Palace will host Championship rivals Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup third round.
