Crystal Palace's Championship match at home to Bolton ended as a stalemate.
Dougie Freedman made his first return to Selhurst Park since leaving to take charge of Bolton in October.
It was yet another draw for Palace, who have gleaned five of them in the last 11 matches with just one victory.
Chris Eagles created the first chance for Bolton as Julian Speroni had to be on hand to palm away his effort.
He then got booked for an elaborate dive on the edge of the Palace box before Darren Pratley fluffed a header wide for the visitors.
Palace claimed a penalty when the ball hit Mears' arm in the penalty area. Then Glenn Murray got the ball in the net but was flagged offside after Adam Bogdan had initially saved Yannick Bolasie's shot.
Wilfried Zaha came closest to breaking the deadlock with an angled shot that crashed against the post and substitute Andre Moritz put the follow-up off target.
Palace could have snatched it near the end as the Championship's top scorer Murray spooned over Zaha's cross. Then in stoppage time, Bogdan made a point-blank save to deny Murray.
