Crystal Palace were dealt a sucker punch as Newcastle scored a stoppage time goal to win 1-0.

Referee Lee Probert allocated three minutes of injury time, however he allowed the clock to run on as Papiss Cisse headed home in the fourth minute of time added on.

It was rough luck on Palace who played well throughout and were worthy of a point - even having opportunities to win it.

Although the Magpies dominated for long periods, they could not get past Julian Speroni who was in fine form making a string of top saves.

Yannick Bolasie was inches away from scoring for Palace in the first half with a left-foot curler that flew just over.

After the break, again Speroni was equal to anything Newcastle had to offer and the keeper did well to block from Cheick Tiote.

Bolasie went closer to scoring as he hit the bar with a powerful strike and in the last stages, Tiote smashed against the woodwork for the home side.

Just as it looked like Palace were claiming a vital point in their bid to stay up, Cisse headed in Hatem Ben Arfa's cross to break Palace's hearts in the 94th minute.

Newcastle: Krul, Yanga-Mbiwa, Coloccini, Williamson, Dummett, Tiote, Sissoko (Marveaux 88), Anita, Gouffran (Shola Ameobi 76), de Jong (Ben Arfa 59), Cisse.

Not used: Gosling, Haidara, S Taylor, Elliot. Carver.

Palace: Speroni, Mariappa, Dann, Delaney, Ward, Dikgacoi, Jedinak, Puncheon (Guedioura 80), Ledley, Bolasie (Bannan 67), Jerome (Murray 76).

Not used: Ince, O’Keefe, Gabbidon, Hennessey.
