Crystal Palace suffer defeat in their opening game of the new season, losing 2-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates.

New signing Brede Hangeland gave the Eagles a shock lead on 35 minutes heading home from a corner.

Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny equalised for the home side shortly before half time from a free kick, ghosting in beyond Hangeland inside the six yard box to nod the ball past Julian Speroni.

Two minutes before the end of normal time Jason Puncheon was shown a red card for a second bookable offence.

Shortly after the Gunners nicked all three points in injury time - Olivier Giroud nodded the ball across goal for Mathieu Debuchy to shoot, and his shot was saved by Speroni only to fall for Aaron Ramsey to tuck the ball home.

Palace: Speroni, Hangeland, Ward, Kelly, Dann (Delaney, 75), Ledley, Puncheon, Bolasie (O'Keefe, 91), Jedinak, Chamakh, Campbell (Gayle, 85)

Subs not used: McCarthy, O'Keefe, Hennessey, Murray, Bannan

Goals: Hangeland (35)
