Crystal Palace are still waiting for their first points of the season after going down to a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Eagles barely threatened the Spurs goal and conceded another late set-piece goal for the second successive game after losing against West Bromwich Albion last weekend.
Tottenham showed their intent from the early stages with Wayne Hennessey coming to Palace's rescue on a couple of occasions. The Wales keeper made some fine stops, first meeting Toby Alderweireld's header from Erik Lamela's corner.
He then got down well to parry Harry Kane's deflected strike from outside the box and reacted quickly to twice deny Vincent Janssen on the rebound.
England man Kane almost gave his side a half-time lead but blasted just wide of the goal from 20 yards.
Yohan Cabaye came on for Joe Ledley for the second half, with both players still not fully fit following their Euro 2016 exertions.
Cabaye gave Palace more impetus but again Kane went close for the home team with a diving header just off target. Meanwhile, Cabaye spurned Palace's best chance of the game by spooning Andros Townsend's pass well over the bar from 12 yards.
Dele Alli enter fray for Tottenham and immediately set Vincent Janssen through on goal but the striker somehow fluffed his shot when it was easier to score.
Eight minutes from time, Tottenham scored the crucial goal. Damien Delaney made a brave block as Spurs won a corner but was injured in the process.
Eagles boss Alan Pardew decided to break the cardinal rule of making substitutions when defending a corner and replaced the centre back with new signing James Tomkins, along with Jordon Mutch.
From the flag kick, Kane headed the ball back into the six-yard box and Tomkins was all at sea and allowed Victor Wanyama the simplest of headers to score.
