Crystal Palace exited the EFL Cup after a 2-0 loss away to Southampton.
Palace's four-game unbeaten run came to a halt where their Premier League rivals ran out worthy winners despite the efforts of Wayne Hennessey who made a series of fine saves.
The tie was evenly-balanced up until 19 minutes when Palace were dealt a blow with the loss of skipper Scott Dann who gingerly walked off with a hamstring injury.
His replacement Martin Kelly then made a game-changing error by conceding a penalty in the 32nd minute. His touch from Cuco Martina's through ball was a tad heavy and he brought down Shane Long as he tried to recover the ball. Charlie Austin converted the resulting spot kick.
Saints then made it 2-0 on 64 minutes through Jake Hesketh. James Ward-Prowse fed Shane Long and the Irishman turned Joel Ward, fired a shot that was saved by Hennessey, but the rebound fell to Hesketh who drove into the back of the net.
The hosts controlled the rest of the match, and despite the introduction of Christian Benteke and Jason Puncheon, the Eagles were unable to score.
