Crystal Palace were defeated 2-0 away to Arsenal.

It was a comfortable win for the Gunners with Palace offering little in the way of any attacking threat and the performance leaves new boss Sam Allardyce with plenty to work on.

Wayne Hennesey produced a number of decent saves to deny the North London club, who move up to third in the league table.

Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal the lead with a contender for goal of the season in the 17th minute with a 'scorpion' kick. Alexis Sanchez sent in a cross from the left and somehow, Giroud managed to back-heel a volley in off the crossbar.

The points were in the bag for the hosts with another goal in off the bar after 56 minutes. Nacho Monreal's cross was sliced into the danger zone by Scott Dann and Alex Iwobi headed in despite Joel Ward's attempt to clear off the line.

Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Gabriel, Koscielny, Monreal, Elneny (Coquelin 72), Xhaka, Iwobi (Oxlade-Chamberlain 77), Perez (Ramsey 72), Sanchez, Giroud.

Not used: Ospina, Mustafi, Reine-Adelaide, Maitland-Niles.

Palace: Hennessey, Kelly, Dann, Tomkins, Ward, Flamini, Cabaye (Mutch 65), Zaha, Puncheon, Townsend (Lee 71), C. Benteke (Campbell 77).

Not used: Speroni, Phillips, Husin, Sako.
