Crystal Palace took a giant step towards Premier League safety with a 2-1 win at Liverpool.

Christian Benteke scored two goals against his former club to help the Eagles to a third successive win at Anfield – and be the first side to do it since Chelsea in October 2005.

Palace had to again come back from behind after they conceded in the 24th minute thanks to a super free-kick from Reds playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian was fouled by Luka Milivojevic 30 yards from goal but got up to arrow over the Palace wall, beyond Wayne Hennessey, and into the back of the net.

The Eagles pegged Liverpool back with an equaliser three minutes before half-time as Yohan Cabaye raced onto Joel Ward's ball over the top and he crossed to Benteke to fire in.

Liverpool dominated possession but failed to get beyond a well-organised Eagles defence and the Londoners almost snatched another goal on a rare attack but Cabaye blasted over.

They then grabbed what proved to be the winning goal in the 74th minute with Benteke again after he nodded in Andros Townsend's corner from five yards.

Palace held on despite more than six minutes of stoppage time and being forced to play an injured James Tomkins away from danger up front having used all their substitutes.

Victory moves Palace up to 12th in the table and all but safe with 38 points with five matches left to play.
