Wayne Hennessey put in an unusually good display

Crystal Palace suffered their second defeat of the season with a 1-0 loss at Liverpool.

The Eagles are still without a goal or a point despite an improved performance that had frustrated Liverpool for most of the game.

Palace stopper Wayne Hennessey produced a number of fine saves but his side were unable to record a fourth straight win at Anfield.

James Tomkins made his first start of the season in place of the presumably-injured Jairo Riedewald in a back three, while Andros Townsend came in for Wilfried Zaha in attack.

The Eagles were far more organised than in the previous Saturday's home reverse to Huddersfield and defended stoutly against the hosts.

Liverpool fired in 16 shots on goal but it was Palace who wasted the best chance after Christian Benteke skied Ruben Loftus-Cheek's cutback over from close range on 57 minutes.

Then Sadio Mane grabbed the only goal of the game on 73 minutes after Luka Milivojevic's miscontrol on the edge of the area allowed the Reds player to poke past Hennessey.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Gomez, Klavan, Matip, Robertson, Wijnaldum (Solanke 71), Henderson, Milner, Mane, Firmino (Lovren 90), Sturridge (Salah 61).

Not used: Karius, Flanagan, Can, Origi.

Palace: Hennessey, Ward, Tomkins, Dann, Fosu-Mensah, Van Aanholt (Schlupp 84), Loftus-Cheek, Puncheon (McArthur 73), Milivojevic (Kaikai 77), Townsend, Benteke.

Not used: Speroni, Kelly, Cabaye, Lokilo.
