Crystal Palace crashed out of the Carabao Cup after a 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough.

Roy Hodgson's men again struggled in front of goal and paid the price for their woeful attacking instincts with a shock defeat by Tony Pulis' Championship outfit.

Both teams made eight changes from their respective league encounters at the weekend and it was probably a factor in what was a tepid opening period.

Boro had the best chances of the half with two attempts from Jordan Hugill and a header by Martin Braithwaite that went off target.

But the hosts took the lead in first-half stoppage time in spectacular fashion as Lewis Wing fired home swerving long-range that Vicente Guaita had no chance of stopping.

After the break, Palace put in a much-improved performance and threatened the Boro goal without making keeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos work.

Max Meyer shot into the side-netting and Palace failed to take advantage of several corners with the Middlesbrough defence mopping everything up with ease.

Andros Townsend forced Konstantopoulos into pushing out his dipping shot, but the Eagles bowed out of the competition at the fourth round stage for the second straight season.

Palace: Guaita, Souare (Woods 78), Riedewald, Kelly, Wan-Bissaka, Schlupp, Puncheon (Kaikai 84), Meyer, Townsend, Sorloth, Ayew (Milivojevic 65).

Not used: Speroni, Kirby, Williams, Wickham.

Middlesbrough: Konstantopoulos, McNair, Ayala, Batth, Friend, McQueen (Saville 29), Leadbitter, Wing, Tavernier, Braithwaite (Fletcher 65), Hugill (Gestede 56).

Not used: Lonergan, Wood, Stubbs, Chapman.
