Crystal Palace lost the M23 derby 3-1 away at 10-man Brighton & Hove Albion.

Palace never recovered from going two goals down inside 31 minutes, despite Shane Duffy's red card for the hosts shortly before hand.

Brighton began the game well and were given a very fortunate break after referee Kevin Friend awarded them a penalty in the 24th minute.

Following a melee in the box that Palace failed to clear, James McArthur nicked the ball off Jose Izquierdo but the Colombian fell over his challenge and Friend deemed it a foul. Glenn Murray smashed the resulting kick into the roof of the net for 1-0.

Four minutes later, James Tomkins challenged with Murray in the area and the ball came off the former Palace striker's legs before he crashed on the floor and injured his shoulder. Despite the ball touching Murray last, referee Friend whistled for a Brighton corner kick.

Patrick van Aanholt and Duffy exchanged words before the kick was taken and the Albion defender butted van Aanholt giving Friend no option to send him off.

Leon Balogun came on as manager Chris Hughton shuffled his team and the German's first touch resulted in a goal as he fired in unmarked from the corner.

Luka Milivojevic almost pulled one back for the Eagles but his effort into the bottom corner from McArthur's pull-back was hacked off the line by Bernado.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Brighton got their third goal on the counter attack as Florin Andone outpaced Tomkins on the left wing and neatly dispatched into the corner for a fine solo goal despite the efforts of Tomkins to tackle him.

The Eagles were given a lifeline on 81 minutes when Milivojevic netted from the spot after Wilfried Zaha was hauled down inside the area by Balogun but it was too little too late.

Brighton: Ryan, Montoya, Duffy, Dunk, Bernado, Gross (Balogun 31), Propper, Bissouma, March, Izquierdo (Knockaert 48), Murray (Andone 34).

Not used: Steele, Bong, Kayal, Locadia.
