Zaha: One of three players on four yellow cards going into the match against West Ham

Team news

Wilfried Zaha, James Tomkins and Luka Milivojevic have all picked up four yellow cards so far this season, and one more could see them banned for the next game against Leicester City.

Roy Hodgson has the same squad to pick from again, with Christian Benteke the only one missing out - Hodgson has claimed the Belgium striker could return during the festive period.

For the hosts Marko Arnautovic has been ruled out until the new year, and Jack Wilshere has a new ankle complaint.

They join Aaron Cresswell, Ryan Fredericks, Andriy Yarmolenko, Carlos Sanchez, Manuel Lanzini and Winston Reid on the treatment table.

Roy Hodgson

“We all know we wanted to do better, and we were disappointed about the result, but you have got to let that go,”

“Nothing we can do or say now, two days after that is going to affect that, and we have to make certain that it doesn’t affect us moving forward, that’s the important thing.

“Now we start with a clean slate on Saturday against West Ham with another opportunity to play as well as I think we have been playing and to get a result.”

Hodgson believes the team did not get the rewards on the night which their efforts deserved.

“They (players) all care,” Hodgson added at a press conference reported by the club.

“I suppose you could seriously argue that because fans are so important to the club, and because they work so hard to support their club – and ours in particular do – when you don’t give them the result they are wanting and hoping for, especially in a fixture with the importance of Brighton versus Crystal Palace, you have let them down.

“I thought the players tried very hard to break through, but it wasn’t good enough to win the game, and as a result, no-one was crying about that afterwards, or complaining about it, or suggesting we had been hard done by in any way.”

Manuel Pellegrini

“Palace is the most difficult game this season…because it is the next one.”

“I said before when the results weren’t what we expected, that we are improving as a team. We are doing things better. If you are winning in back-to-back games, the trust of the players is bigger. But we cannot stop in this moment.

“I am happy because we are improving. You must never be 100 per cent happy with the performance because you always need things to improve. We are improving and, I said always since the first game of the season, we are in the correct place to change the style of play.

“We didn’t change because we lost some games. We continued and we are trusting in what we do. The most important thing is the players do it also.”

He added: “We were so bad in the beginning of the season with not one point from 12. We must continue trying to recover that bad start from now until the end of the first round.

“We now have four games, starting this week against Crystal Palace, that we need to add points from.”

“As I always say to the players, we need a performance. If we don’t have high individual performances then it is very difficult to beat a team.

“After that, we have to play as a team. Without the ball, try to defend in the correct position, and with the ball try to play and try to score.

“We have a third challenge at home again, and I hope we can continue in the same way.”
