Palace 0-2 Newcastle

Crystal Palace’s difficult start to the season continued with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Selhurst Park.

Palace enjoyed the better of a largely uneventful first half, with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daichi Kamada both threatening without finding a breakthrough.

Newcastle took the lead just two minutes after the restart when William Osula met Jacob Murphy’s cross with a clinical first-time finish.

Harvey Barnes doubled the visitors’ advantage 11 minutes later, prompting boos from an increasingly frustrated home crowd.

Palace attempted to respond, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek produced important saves to deny Adam Wharton and substitute Dario Osorio.

The result gave Newcastle their first league victory at Selhurst Park in six years and a third Premier League win under Matthias Jaissle.

Palace, meanwhile, have now lost five of their opening eight league matches and sit 17th with seven points, leaving manager Pierre Sage Sage facing mounting scrutiny just four months into his tenure.
