Indeed, its about the abuse of children, and their protection, by people in authority, who committed very serious sexual offences, and then used their position and influence to protect themselves.

But equally those who knew and did nothing, or just accepted it, are equally to blame (if not more so) for accepting and endorsing such behavior.

I would expect that Cyril Smith will be the tip of an increasingly terrible list of names, and that when as details emerge, it will rank up there with Jimmy Savile.

I think we've kind of seen that, like the Catholic Church, society of the past, particualy of the eras leading into the later 80s and early 90s, really didn't care about adults fking children, provided they weren't 'their children'. And of course once it was uncovered, it would be quite logical to conclude that it had already been going on a while, and if it came out, that would likely result in a massive public backlash. Its not really surprising that it might have been covered up, as 'the greater good', much like the way that 'national security' is abused in the same manner.** Which is why the enquiries into the likes of Dolphin Sq or Elm Guest House will ultimately come to nowt in real terms...Files will be lost, key witnesses will either develop sudden amnesia or pop their clogs, a couple of low rent sacrificial lambs will end up in The Scrubs and everything will go on as before....
