In Whelans case I believe he has been very naive, but I dont think he intended to offend. Really he should have just maintained a dignified silence and let the results on the pitch do the talking. I think Whelan is old-fashioned and ignorant but probably not a racist. Like you however, I think he was extremely foolish to say what he did instead of just saying "Mackay made a mistake, he's apologised and now we move on". Instead he's given the story more legs than a caterpillar and ensured it's stayed on the back (and front) pages than it would've done if he'd just kept schtum about the whole thing. I think Whelan is old-fashioned and ignorant but probably not a racist. Like you however, I think he was extremely foolish to say what he did instead of just saying "Mackay made a mistake, he's apologised and now we move on".
