i am surprised that he's been offered a new contract, however, my take is as follows:

1. when he has been fit he's impressed the coaches
2. right back is still a problem for us, so the club feel it is a reasonable risk to take
3. i'm sure the new deal is on reduced terms with a big games played incentive. For a Prem club offering say a basic of £10k a week is quite low (in any other profession massive!) with big add ons etc. Fergie will probably know that the deal being offered is better than he could get from a Championship club
4. SP has always talked about player care. I think this played a part of new deals for players like Wickham and to a lesser extent even Paddy Mac and Ryan Inniss. SP may feel the guy is due a break - hopefully not a literal one!

Basically, this is it. If (a big if given what's happened so far) if he can regain fitness and match fitness without breaking down again and keeps fit then he is likely to prove to have been a bargain. It's not just the right back thing - it's also his versatility across the back line.

Here's hoping he can make this season.

Fair play to Parish for giving the lad another chance though after 3 years it seems to be one of sympathy rather than one of hope

And we still need a striker

I got a bit of a slagging a short while back for questioning a poster who said we should give Jimmy Mac another year's contract "because he had been such a loyal servant". I dared to suggest that places in the squad should be based on playing ability and not on nostalgia - or on sympathy in this case. In conclusion, I hope the decision is based on footballing potential.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

If that was the case my staying for the second half vs Sunderland, not to mention the numerous 90min endurances I had been through outside the PL, should at least warrant a Carabao cup cameo off the bench by now.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

If he was a race horse they’d have shot him by now.

Another astute purchase by our world renowned network of scouts and DOF.

There's still time for that to be the case. After all most (but not all) of our purchases over the last 3 or 4 years have proven to have been good ones: Ayew, Eze, Guehi, Andersen, Olise, Hughes, Doucoure, Richards, Johnstone.

Here’s hoping he comes good. We clearly are not buying any new ones so we could do with him. Based on that, good call to keep him.
Our shareholders really need to put up a bit more.

It will feel like getting a new player when he's fit

Totally true - I forget about him on a weekly basis.

I was not expecting this news. He is relatively young so if Palace believe they have got to the bottom of his injury issues then it might be worth the extension. You have to feel the management believe there is a player in there to make the offer.
My next dilemma is if this is the case why only 1 year? Knowing our luck he will have a full pre-season, work his his way into the first team and start looking like the player we all hoped he would be only to leave at the end of the season on a free!!
