I was not expecting this news. He is relatively young so if Palace believe they have got to the bottom of his injury issues then it might be worth the extension. You have to feel the management believe there is a player in there to make the offer.
My next dilemma is if this is the case why only 1 year? Knowing our luck he will have a full pre-season, work his his way into the first team and start looking like the player we all hoped he would be only to leave at the end of the season on a free!!

If he doesn't come good, then we're only stuck with him for another 12 months

If he does come good, we have a player in a position we are short on

If it's somewhere in between and he proves to be no better than poor/average, we have a chance of getting out money back, at least.

i am surprised that he's been offered a new contract, however, my take is as follows:

1. when he has been fit he's impressed the coaches
2. right back is still a problem for us, so the club feel it is a reasonable risk to take
3. i'm sure the new deal is on reduced terms with a big games played incentive. For a Prem club offering say a basic of £10k a week is quite low (in any other profession massive!) with big add ons etc. Fergie will probably know that the deal being offered is better than he could get from a Championship club
4. SP has always talked about player care. I think this played a part of new deals for players like Wickham and to a lesser extent even Paddy Mac and Ryan Inniss. SP may feel the guy is due a break - hopefully not a literal one!

Right Back may be a problem, but he's not played there once for us.

He's got the off season to improve his conditioning and fitness. Let's hope he succeeds. Potentially he's a really good, still young RB/CB

Bah, Benteke must have given Ferguson the secret password to the vault deep within the Swiss Alps that is under 24 hour elite guard that holds the video tape that compromises Parish, there's no other explanation.

We’ll all be eating our words when he’s made 100 appearances for us and then makes his England debut

It was always going to be a dilemma.

Let him go and he ends up playing for another prem team we've made a big mistake.

Resign and he spends it all out injured we've made a big mistake.

Maybe there is some optimism, and keeping ward and Clyne was bundled in with the fact that they think that this guy can still be the long term answer.

he hasn't really played anyway for us yet. You do know he's been injured for the last 3 years, right.

Madness. Unless we're hanging on for the insurance money.

It's too late for that. His contract has expired so any insurance will have expired. New contract = new insurance premium, but I would expect the premium to be uneconomical and any new policy unlikely to pay out should he have to quit due an existing issue.

Debut vs spurs he played LB, then every friendly or u21 game he's played cb, so the very few times he's not been injured, he hasn't played rb

Yes, WBA mostly LB and CB, none at RB.

I'm sure that I read somewhere that we don't insure our players
