Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace slumped into the relegation zone after a 1-0 defeat at home to Coventry.

David Bell leaped off the bench to score the only goal of the game in the 85th minute to leave Palace third bottom in the Championship.

Coventry created the first chances with Carl Baker letting fly with a shot from 25 yards that was saved easily by Julian Speroni and Aron Gunnarsson blasted off target.

Darren Ambrose went agonisingly close with a 35-yard free-kick, then saw a shot parried around the post by keeper Keiren Westwood.

Michael McIndoe wasted a gilt-edged chance to give City the lead before Ambrose had an effort cleared off the line by Richard Wood after good work by Alan Lee.

Speroni kept the scores level at the break with a fine save to deny Jon Stead.

The Eagles started the second half on fire and should have scored but Ambrose scuffed his shot from Carle's pass. Then Westwood turned Johannes Ertl's header over the bar.

Ambrose went close with another long-range free-kick, while former Palace striker CLINTON MORRISON fired an effort straight at Speroni.

Westwood made an excellent save from Carle before substitute Bell struck the winning goal with five minutes left.

Bell played a one-two with Stead who sent him clear before chipping the onrushing Speroni to score.
