Mel Blyth was a great CB and hard,you wouldn't want to take him on.
I recall John Jackson saying that,although he was a sound defender he use to dread a back pass from him,as he use to thump it so hard it was a job stopping it from going into the net.

 

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................

Must be Byrne, but seeing the remarks about Mel Blythes backpasses i do rember an own goal he scored almost from the halfwayline.

To see the range of players regarded as "the greatest ever" brings back some terrific memories.

Like many of you I have seen all of those mentioned so far. For my money, Cliff Holton just shades Johnny Byrne.

I think that I have asked this question before but I'll try again ... does anyone remember an evening match during which Cliff scored in the Whitehorse Lane end from a direct free kick that he took from a couple of yards inside the Holmesdale half out near the Park Road touchline? I would guess that it was nearly fifty years ago but it still stays with me as one of the most memorable goals that I have seen at Selhurst.

Kenny Sansom, by a big margin. He had it all: strength, pace, skill, awareness and most essentially, consistency.

(And to the OP, Jim Cannon's appearance record beats Terry Long's but only by a few, not 300+)

Greatest player ..... Wrighty (goals); Cannon (a rock at the back); Budgie (quality keeper and great handstands during the pre match warm up); Pardew (that goal at Villa Park - I nearly wet myself); Sansom (the most accomplished left back I have ever seen): all contenders but has to be Vince Hilaire for his sheer pace and excitement. Will never forget 1979 v Burnley .....

Perhaps Wilf should watch a few vids of Vince !!!!
