We have new young players, and we already look better than we did last year. I think people forget how woeful we looked in most games last year. We were ridiculously lucky to get the points we did. There are some concerns, mainly Wilf's play, but I remain optimistic. Lucky? A team basically safe in February, lucky?

I'll go with the glass half full crowd. Was an entertaining game and makes me hopeful about the year. Yes, pieces are missing but we're moving in the right direction.

for me Wilf needs to be dropped he has lost pace and tricks which is sad , we need a winger with pace Wilf hasnt got it anymore, Guaita cant catch a ball i have said this for sometime great shot stopper but cant take crosses, lots of pluses and we looked better towards the end after a good start, so onwards and upwards

Just back from the game. Not sure what to make of that especially with them being a bit of an unknown quantity. I'm mainly concerned about the lack of goal threat. Wilf was back to his moaning again, he thinks it helps him but if he just got on with it!

New manager. New system. Key players missing. What do people expect exactly?

Thought Gallagher and the two cb’s were good today. What was up with Wilf? Constantly moaning and I don’t think he even had a hard game.
In dog beers I’ve only had one. |

Brentford weren't bad but late in the game they seemed jaded and there for the taking. We didn't seem to sense it enough. Guehi and Anderson look special. Mitchell looks like he might be able to grow in this kind of team (and needs to). Wilf had a stinker but let's not assume his career is at the end of the road. Gallagher was energetic but a bit of a headless chicken. Schlupp similar. Kouyate better in the second half to the first. But lacked composure. Jimmy Mac was good for his age. And was outright good. But we are quite reliant on him. So much falls apart at the feet of ward in this system..
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

I’m a little confused as to why the new young players can be used as an excuse in this game today. They were perhaps the 3 best players on the pitch for us. Saying it’s early days is ok but saying we are bedding in new young players when they clearly were outperforming established players…well I won’t buy that sorry. Wilf was useless and is far too often too isolated when he is wide left. That’s an issue for PV to work on. It’s clear to me the refs are behaving differently this season…last couple of years any contact was deemed a foul. This season they seem to have adopted the type of refereeing we saw in the Euros. Wilf had better get up to speed with this ASAP. All in all very few chances created and we were again a difficult team to watch. We picked up in the second half but to me the press from Brentford dropped off and allowed us some room…had they been able to keep up that press I wonder how we would have fared. I still have major concerns around playing out from the back.

A result is a result. We were more fun to watch, and the defense gives me more confidence than it ever did last season. Andersen is a rock, Guehi dependable, Ward looked serviceable this week, and Mitchell... well, at least he didn't get BADLY beaten. (He passed poorly, though, and didn't look as focused as he did when trying to earn his time on the pitch.) We showed much better energy at midfield; it's a shame we don't have Eze. Gallagher played a strong first half but ran out of steam. His fitness is suspect. Maca played another age-defying game, eager and disciplined from start to finish. In past seasons, Wilf would have scared a team like Brentford for 94 minutes. Today, hardly ever. I'm worried that he has lost all motivation even to wow the crowd occasionally. He played, as we say in American football, like a JAG: Just Another Guy. Benteke unfortunately played like the Benteke of old – well, middle age: solid holdup play followed by missed opportunities for himself and teammates. Schlupp was JAG, and Ayew tried too hard to impress, missing chances to find teammates. The defense is good enough, though better teams than Brentford will exploit Ward and Mitchell. On attack, we won't score many goals unless Wilf remembers how he used to love beating people, and Gallagher becomes comfortable with his teammates. Or Parish restructures Benteke's contract and pays him by the goal and assist.

3 attempts to their 12, none on target, that's a pretty poor effort from us. We still struggle to score and Wilf is still moaning. The return of Eze cant come quick enough.
