Murray, Jerome and Gayle

I watched the Championship show last night on Channel 5 and the first three games featured our recent strikers doing the business and scoring for Brighton, Norwich and Newcastle respectively. Given that all three struggled in the Prem does this show the gulf in quality between the two leagues? Or should we have kept at least Gayle?

Murray proved he was Prem quality and then Pardew insisted on Wickham who is a much worse much more lazy version. He finally got it right with Benteke who is much better and Murray is another year older so he's in the right place now but we'd of won a lot more games second half of last season with Murray in the team. Gayle is a no brainer. Everyone says he's found his level but if he was starting every week and next to Benteke he'd have 9 goals for us now as well. He's also the only striker we had completely different from the rest. Wickham and Campbell are just much, much worse versions of Benteke. Gayle was an alternative option. Jerome no, he has found his level.

Murray proved what his real level was when he couldn't get in another struggling premier league side. He's a good player but is not good enough for the top division. And certainly not for a team aiming for a top half finish. Wickham is a technically better player and has more potential to develop. Gayle is an interesting one as he is at least a different type of forward, but to suggest he would have 9 goals in the PL is, I think, laughable. His natural finishing ability is over-estimated. But he could have helped to provide a plan B. Unfortunately that plan B was meant to be with Remy, who has got injured. Jerome was never good enough but was very good at the job Pulis asked him to do.

Murray, had some premiership chops, when he came back from loan at Reading, but probably not enough. The other two, excellent at Championship, but at best average premiership players. That said, I'd have thought that a front two of Jerome and Gayle would be great combination, provided you had the midfield to cover them. If Jerome could find a finish, he'd have been one of the best players in this league. He just couldn't seem to score in the premiership.

Murray, yes. Although five years too old to really impact the prem. Gayle, yes. Potent finisher. But never really given an extended chance. Jerome, nah. (Although did his job well under Poolis).

I think Murray is the only one who actually proved himself in the Prem, he did score a run of goals in Pards' first season remember! Still think it was the right decision for us to sell for the price we got offered, though. Bournemouth was a good contract for him, but football-wise it was a poor decision, they were never going to play the type of football that he thrives on. Similarly, in the right system Gayle is definitely Premier League quality. Unfortunately for him, it's a system that is rarely seen in the Premier League these days. That debate has been done to death. Jerome with shooting boots would be a hell of a player. For some reason when he comes up to the Premier League he has an allergy to shooting on target. Skying an open goal from six yards out for us against Norwich springs to mind.

Murray is good at positioning and scoring, but his ability to link up play and then get into the box is poor, he lacks pace to get past defenders onto a long pass and he can't close down. Jerome, can do all that, but can't score. If you could merge the two, you'd have a perfect striker. With both 'aging' their capacity to deliver for the team was waning. At best Murray had another season in him, maybe - but really should be a bench player at this level.
