The laudable Toby Young and co are setting up an free speech union, which if we can grow it is hopefully going to become a force for liberty in the online space. Made an inappropriate joke online and activist morons trying to end your career? [Tweet Link]

Toby Young flirts with eugenics and yet he is regarded as laudable? Not everyone agrees. Free speech is a perfectly fine aspiration to hold, but it can never mean that everything and anything can be said publicly. Hate speech is real. Freedom has to exist under the law and not beside it. Nor does it mean that social media companies, or university campuses, must accept all views onto their platforms. They are their platforms and not those of anyone seeking to use them. Unrestricted free thought, and free speech in private,, is not in question. That's everyone's right.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Eugenics can be a force for good just as it can be a force for the opposite. There is nothing inherent in eugenics, it's purely down to how it's used. So saying Young flirts with eugenics is kind of a meaningless statement. We could say lots of people 'flirt' with eugenics when they choose one person to mate with over other options. As for hate speech. Let me quote Orwell....A quote that amusingly can be found outside the BBC. 'If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.' The soviets tried to introduce the concept of 'hate speech' at the UN after the second world war. Back then we had people who weren't fake conservatives and the concept was rejected. Our rules on speech were an example to the world, until the Blair government injected this sickness into our law books. Now we have failures to the left of us, failures to the right....and in the middle...the failures are the worst of all. f*** 'hate speech'.
