What does the panel think.

I think Sunak's tax increases are doing nothing but damage and he knows it.

Keynes, dear Rishi, Keynes.

A wealth tax of 2% could produce 96 billions the rich do not pay their way.

QE could be used to stimulate the low-paid to buy.

There's plenty that could be done, but we should not shirk from re-balancing society imo.

As a left-leaning person I would like a move away from sitting on property to tax-breaks and incentives for our public service workers and low to normal income families who are being hit without any tangible benefit.

I would give Rishi the boot he is an economic dunce but Johnson in his present state is unlikely to.

Over to the wise sages of the HOL.

Wealth tax?
Please explain as there must be a point it starts and stops.
Exactly who pays what is down to the rules in place.
I doubt labour would change much at the higher end either.
It will be like the motorist to khant. Easy targets on a lower paye.

Well - I certainly disagree that the wealthy do not pay their way.
The majority do the right thing and it is a proven fact that if you push too hard that it has the opposite effect.
I agree with taxing the large Companies that pay too little tax that's for sure.
I also know that many supposedly "well off" people are being squeezed hard - Middle Englanders as they are known - and that is causing issues in that their spending power has fallen which in turn raises less money for the Treasury.
However - even as a right leaning person I do accept that their are some real issues within our Society and that some people are really struggling right now.
Personally I would not raise the National Insurance this year - it is 12 months too soon after the pandemic in my opinion.
I would raise the lower tax threshold to help people out and I would hope that the energy price cap can be negotiated sensibly.

The original poster stated 2%.

You then criticise the opposition for taxing lower paid people (low emission charging in London has a lot to do with pollution) when the current Chancellor's plans are doing exactly that.

a) employers find it difficult to recruit staff.

thus making it more expensive to do business.

thus they pass on the costs to the end customer.

b) minimum wage workers cannot afford to live in places like London. Rents are too high.

So, we must give the London Long-term unemployed the metaphorical kick up the hole they deserve. Cut their dole and make them get a job.

the longer they have been on the dole the harder the kick.

send them to live in dormitory accommodation in a village in the North of Scotland. Thus freeing up accommodation for taxpaying workers in our 'Hood.

There is a huge gap between earnings in London and the cost of living - the numbers of employed people living in poverty is the highest it's ever been, so as much as all the tabloid rhetoric around making people get a job (like that's even possible) sounds great, it's really just posturing.

So CP, are you seriously saying that Corbyn's lot would have done better? I don't think so.

And the current financial situation has been compounded by the need to spend BILLIONS on this unprecedented bloody pandemic over the past couple of years.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

the poorest worker MUST SURELY have better life outcomes than the average dole-head, or the best off dole-head.

many dole-heads have friends & family shoving money at them, or a little 'cash in hand' earner on the side. And then think of the tons of leisure time they have, a late morning in bed seven days a week. Many single mums are not really single at all. But only for tax & welfare purposes. The dad of her kids (or the new boyfriend) is in circulation and earning while officially he lives on a sofa far away.

countries with a cheap 'cost of living' do not have legions of scroungers dragging everybody down. Poland, Serbia, Spain, China, India, Finland etc.

high cost of living = an out of control Welfare State. Sweden, Netherlands, Ireland.

Oh yes, a lot better! The NHS was safer in his hands, he wouldn"t be selling it off through the back door-rumours abound of paying for your covid test soon? The chancellor meeting pharmos in California? And of course, the £47 thousand million going to the CONservative pm and his chums- remember his pal who got a £millions contract turning her dog food canning business into dog food and PPE are us? Yes, you might not like all his ideas, friends, or any at all, but the track and trace £36 million, stolen PPE £47 billion, and dropping the ball in the first two weeks-leading to over 150,000 deaths, would not have happened!

Nice rant - absolutely without proven facts but as jaw gnashing rants go that one is right up there!
