Was Benteke our first choice?

In June we had a 32m bid accepted for Batshuayi before he moved to Chelsea. Does this mean Benteke was second choice or were we somehow in a position where we could have bid for both? If so, does this indicate that we'll have a healthy transfer kitty in January?

I was told before FA Cup final that Benteke was our first choice. I believe that Marseille used us to flush out the Chelsea bid, in return we were given first refusal on Mandanda. Not sure how much of second part is true but it makes sense, but know for sure Benteke was first choice

Could be completely wrong but... I read we bid that much for him as part of the deal to get Mandanda? It meant Chelsea put in a bid and they sold him a bit quicker. Don't think we were ever gonna get him.

What they said^^ OM owed money which had a deadline & (as if by magic) Batshuai was sold for almost exactly what they owed plus the sell on fee for Standard Liege (I think) and just in the nick of time.

The club always said they wanted two new strikers and that's what they got. They also paid Liverpool's asking price of £32 million in paying £27 million plus £5 million add-ons.
