Looking at the stats the actual winner was voter apathy. Turn out at both was down by around 50%!!!! The labour vote stayed stable at one and was down by 5000 in the other. Hardly a victory. The Tory vote was decimated by apathy and defections to more right wing parties. Hardly a surprise either. I predicted that the tory vote would drop when Sunak was placed in charge due to his race. It dropped immediately by 6% and has not recovered. Its sad that anyone would think like that in this day and age. And you can't say it was due to policies or what he has done. It was immediate. Those voters have turned to Reform.

Hardly a victory. Wow, just wow! Obviously, we weren't beaten by Arsenal, Brighton or Chelsea then. Thank you for your cutting edge insight.

Tory voters turned to Reform because Sunak isn't white? Reform in this by-election was represented by the excellent Ben Habib. Personally I think he should be party leader over that liability Tice. This is Ben Habib. [Tweet Link]

Edited by Stirlingsays (16 Feb 2024 10.18am) That Sunak comment is very racist and untrue, look at the Government front bench. I agree Habib is excellent, Tice is ok as a drum beater and is very committed to the cause Tory voters I suspect stayed home as much as voted for Reform. See what Reform's electoral contract looks like, I would suspect sound economic plans Edited by HKOwen (16 Feb 2024 10.41am) Edited by HKOwen (16 Feb 2024 10.43am)
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

If the Tories want to avoid a massacre, then they need to get rid of Sunak. The Reform Party seriously needs to up their game. If Farage was in charge they would have a better chance, although, I wouldn't blame him for no wanting to stand again. Labour voters are either young and naive, have short memories, are of foreign origin and or are just plain stupid.

Or they're just looking for absolutely anything different to the current lot, which is perfectly understandable. I've voiced my many issues with Starmer & Labour numerous times, and I won't personally be voting for them, but I find it hard to criticise people who are given the performance of the current government.

I was actually surprised the turn-out was so high. They 'hate all of us' a labour canvasser. I was expecting a big drop because of Stalin Starmer, but with a recession piled on top of a country where nothing else works either after 14 years, labour had comfortable wins. Dragging it out will not change things imo.

There must be more votes in Rochdale than there are driving licences. I wonder how many different spellings of Mohammed Mohamed were on the ballot.
