As its in the public eye I'm posting that Bubble Wrap has made an apology and explanation on the BBS at 11am today in the 'BBC documentary-Alfie vs homophobia' thread and the part about us being blown out of proportion I agree with. Suddenly we have a homophobia problem at Palace. Yes there is homophobia in society and football but what's happening here is our minor part is being overblown and you'll probably find any chanting of 'bum' or 'holding hands' carries on by hardly anyone or no one and it'll be other clubs who will have the spotlight on them or individual's faces in the press the day after a to game. It was barely anyone last season btw. I only recall hearing the song twice or so through the whole season. But I'm sure plenty will continue as if it was more. Unfortunately Bubbles comments were very damaging to the club and this forum. He knew that he was commenting in a thread which was initiated by an ex rugby player who had come out a few years ago who now was working as a programme maker. He knew the programme maker was making a programme about homophobia in football to be aired as part of the celebration of 50 years since the Law changed. Why then did he make his links between homosexuality and paedophilia?

Why then did he make his links between homosexuality and paedophilia? In your eyes this club and forum have been 'damaged'. I totally reject that hyperbolic reaction. Freedom of speech means that people will be offended. 'Hate speech' laws aren't designed to close down opinions you don't like. Katie Hopkins makes a living in this country amongst these laws and I seriously think some people just think they can censor things they don't like. I view the dictatorial reactions against free speech as potentially more damaging to diversity on this board than anything else. Of course there is no connection between homosexuality and pedophilia. It's an erroneous connection and an unfortunate one. He's rightly apologized for it but unfortunately can't do so now on this site. Throwing the toys out of the pram instead of debating the point is not a mature way to react. Bubble was a good poster. Edited by Stirlingsays (01 Aug 2017 7.36pm)

Producers of tv programmes....being of the media industry in general aren't custodians for the general good or truth despite some implicitly suggesting that. They are about self interest and that's always been their bottom line. The ethical in the media industry must be amongst the smallest minorities in this blue world. I do agree that the media industry broadly lacks ethics. However... Most individuals do the job they are asked to do and in many cases either have no significant ethical responsibility worth measuring or can be demonstrably accused of lacking ethics merely by doing the job asked of them (both inside and outside the media). As soon as you have a free, competitive and profit-driven media you are going to ram into ethical issues. But for all its faults it's the way I'd rather the media was. If your actions knowingly perpetuate any flawed industry -- by far the primary ethical failing of journalists in particular -- you can be accused of lacking ethics. And people working across industries and professions do this. Doctors, teachers, lawyers, politicians, builders. It's a long old list.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |
