I think there is a fourth option, and it's actually the one we're following. Basically, it's your option one (above) but, because we have limited funds, it's being enacted over three years rather than all at once. PV is getting the players that fit his style, but it's taking far more time than we'd ideally want to bring them in. If we were Chelsea, Olise, Eze, Richards, Ahamada, Gallagher, Edouard, Mateta, Lokonga, Andersen, and Guehi would have all arrived in a single window, and if not that then in two windows. I think we're doing exactly what they'd do, but it's taking us three years rather than one to do it. In some ways it's the right approach. Ideally, we wouldn't be underfunded and we wouldn't even need to discuss this but as long as we are, staying the course with the manager and taking a measured, long-term view of squad building - frustrating as it may be in the interim - is probably the best way forward. We'll know, to a point, in a few weeks time. If Ahamada and Lokonga impress and we start to look like a considerably better side over the next month, then it'll be easier to feel good about the jigsaw puzzle being assembled in this way. IMHO that is option number 3 Syd. The praying things go well is looking more and more likely, unless it is deemed that we are in no danger whatsoever.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Lack of quality investment in this window, will virtually ensure we find our natural level next season, the Championship. You may well be right. Five points from the last twenty four available. The games coming up? We could lose every one of them. I don't suppose we will. You get what you pay for and we don't pay out much. There's more than an element of 'Emperor's Clothes' about Patrick Vieira. He's eloquent, we want him to do well. Whether he gets the best out of this group of players is arguable. It’s hugely disappointing that we are having to debate this issue at all, given where we were 12 months ago. My perception now is that the club just want to hold onto PL status as cheaply as possible, survive this season and then have a financial reset in the summer when we have a number of players coming to the end of their contracts. If that’s the case then it’s frustrating not only for us fans, but the manager as well. It becomes a test of nerve, and some people are all doom and gloom already. And that’s after a really tough run of fixtures. Performances have shown some improvement of late but our lack of composure in front of goal is hurting us. I think we will be ok, but it feels like a Roy type slog to 40 points albeit with a radically different playing style

Interesting thoughts and questions. You could argue that the current academy could result in ‘the team of the late 2020s’ in the similar fashion to how ‘the team of the 80s’ came about, but this time built on the foundations of the style of play instigated by PV. As you say it could be suggested El Tel just reaped the benefits of the work done by Allison. However, it was a long painful process to get there and 6 years out of the top division to get there. Does anybody want to endure that again? And of course the dream team of the 80s fell apart within 2 years of gaining promotion to the top tier! Originally posted by sydtheeagle
What cannot be contested is that while Allison never reaped the fruit, he did plant the tree. He changed our style and led the transition to and initial success of what was then the best youth setup in the country. The reinvention of Palace occurred under his watch. Yes, he didn't get us over the hump; it was Terry Venables who did that (and reaped the dividends) but without Allison doing the legwork and rebuilding our entire philosophy, there's a strong argument that the Team of the Eighties would never have happened. All this leads to a valid question. If Vieira is, as you suggest, possibly a latterday Malcolm Allison and we moved on from him at the end of this season but, in two years' time we found ourselves in Europe, how much more fondly would PV's critics today look back on his time as our manager? And equally, if we had stuck with Big Mal for another twelve months, would we have won the promotion that Venables led us to anyway? Just food for thought.

I think a lot of people would stop going if it happened again and before you know it you are looking at how Charlton and Portsmouth have ended up. Some may argue not being in the Premier doesn’t really matter, but not sure enough do these days when the financial rewards are so massively different between the divisions, far more than was the case years ago Originally posted by cryrst
The big question though is would you still go to Selhurst ?

I think we are right in the mix for a relegation spot. My main reasons are our inability to create chances coupled with the other team's now all starting to look better than us. Bournemouth are creating chances as are Southampton (thankfully Che Adams keeps missing them)

It appears fans are bored of being mid table and are desperate for a relegation battle for a bit of excitement. We havent been anywhere near relegation since 2016.
