Well, this is what I responded to: 'Elvis recorded that in 1972. The BBC last aired an episode of the Black and White Minstrel Show in 1978. Just because more people were ignorant (dictionary definition - not pejorative) of such racism at the time doesn't make it ok now.' You used the word 'ignorant', your poor choice of word not mine and my response was in countenance to that....and pretty much proves that Elvis wasn't ignorant. The black-face show had a long history. I don't know if there was bad intent or not. I barely remember it, though it looks bad. Black people have been 'whitening up' all the time...never had a problem with it myself but that is my perspective. Accuracy helps with credibility.
- You questioned whether Elvis was racist for singing the American Trilogy Now you're saying that black-face was ok, but really wasn't, but some black people white-face and that's ok. At least all that zipping back and forth has put my neck back in place. I'm still trying to come up with examples of white-face, and all I have is Dave Chappelle, Eddie Murphy and the Wayans Brothers - all pretty contemporary. Also, "countenance" doesn't mean what you think it means. Words matter. Edited by Ray in Houston (23 Aug 2017 9.32pm)

I'll give you 'countenance'...it's late. As for me not making sense, I'll leave that for others to judge. I'm not sure why it being contemporary makes a difference but white face?....Lenny Henry, Whoopi Goldberg to add to your list.

"Removed" suggests that it's just gone; "moved" confirms that it's still around, just put somewhere else. As to pandering to minorities, what on earth is leaving in place a symbol of white supremacy when the majority of those in its shadow want it moved, if not pandering to a minority? Edited by Ray in Houston (23 Aug 2017 4.47pm) Funny how this didn't seem to bother them to the point of "doing an ISIS" during the 8 years of a Clinton presidency, and the 8 years of an Obama presidency. Almost like it's a politically motivated thing. Or statues were magically endowed with weapons-grade "triggering capability" once Trump got elected. Incidentally, statues (more generically, "things" mean different things to different people. Someone somewhere will always be offended about something. But you go down that path of catering to the perma-offended and lowest common denominators. See where it gets you.

Much in the same way though, isn't it 'interesting' how there was a sudden equally magical need and desire to erect these monuments predominantly during the lynching and KKK era several decades after the civil war? It's just metal and stone, but there is no denying that to all sides at various points in time, these monuments have come to hold very significant and varied meaning and that meaning does not necessarily follow a timeline or a narrative that suits everyone. It never did.

Are there any statues of cyclists in the UK that can be removed to transport museums perhaps. After all many cyclists are more or less fascist these days in the way they career around the roads endangering pedestrians and motorists while clad in para-military lycra uniforms. They probably take their cue from the Japanese fascist army during World War II who used bicycles extensively in their campaign tours of Southeast Asia.

I watched Hilary at the conference, watched that incredibly over confident animation of her smashing through a 'glass ceiling'. I listened to her hilariously taking the moral high ground over Trump.....in some ways to be fair she is better....but overall I don't see much in it. I'm more aligned with her policies but her party's social stances so completely turn me off that I actually celebrated when Trump won. The media and pundits got actually what they deserved. The country just brought the lies of a politician from the other side....not much changed there. He has an interesting stance on protectionism that...only a country like America could actually implement.....though I doubt he's do more than threaten it. I prefer his foreign policy to Obama's terrible failures. He's already done better in this area. China are sanctioning North Korea at considerable cost to themselves. Russia at least listen to Trump...we will see what results from it. Trump's relationship with the mainstream media is truly awful and while I agree with him that they aren't much better than an actual opposition and most are his enemy...the reality is he should be far more professional about it and stop lying and spinning himself every three minutes. More lunacy to stop us being offended. Perhaps someone with better decoding skills than I have could explain what offence might be caused to us. Edited by hedgehog50 (25 Aug 2017 12.06pm)
