I think its still more about the kind of politics the people who 'revere their tradition and heritage of the South and the Confederacy' than the actual people the statues are of.

The irony of course is that the South would have done away with Slavery fairly soon, as industrialisation was rendering slavery an expensive proposition anyhow - Slavery isn't really conducive to a industrialised economy. The North, being more industrialised largely done away with the concept of slavery not on moral grounds, but pragmatic ones.

Well, according to you, on another thread, the USA is some totalitarian hell-hole where innocent muslims are imprisoned and tortured and nazi storm troopers roam the streets with the government's blessing. So it seems it didn't matter who won - all Americans are fascists aren't they?

We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell]

Let's contort other peoples beliefs to make ourselves more comfortable with our own world view. That'll be fun. Right? Right??

There seems to be a very big difference between what you think I think about the USA and what I think about the USA and Americans.

For the record, if it makes it easier, I'm with Ken Kesey in regards to 'Sometimes a Great Nation'.

America is a wonderful place in many respects and yet shamefully inadequate in others.

Where paranoia and witch hunts are concerned, McCarthyism is an easy reference but any nation at odds with another suffers from the same fears. Britain had it in two world wars.

As Winston Churchill noted: America will always do the right thing...after its exhausted every other possibility.

More OTT dramatic comments. The jazz hands of HOL.

The left hate America and the right love it. Yes, so easy, so straight forward. Let's go with that.

The left has a long history of attacking most American policy while lending their tacit support to America's enemies - Vietnam for example. Pre-WWII the left openly supported Stalin's Russia.

Whereas instead it's now Trump getting on his knees for a Russian government that bumps off its own people and attempts to interfere with US democratic process - and he desperately tries to remove sanctions applied for doing so.

It's possible to have a certain political bent, but not be blind to such behaviour. No-one wins when they become overly affiliated with left or right because they just create an opportunity for, and get into bed with, others keen to ramp up disharmony.
