I think he meant it is not as good as 50m upfront with no add ons

I've always felt that for Zaha it was this window of he'd stay more or less the rest of his career.

He's 27 in November so you'd think he'd either move for big money this window or will clubs be put off spending the kind of money we would want for someone pushing 28?

You look at the largest fees in the past and they tend to be for players 25 and under with the exception of a couple of world class players.

At 25/26 you're paying for a player who will have the best years of their career ahead of them, at 28 you're looking more at 3 years and especially a player like Wilf who relies on explosive power and pace. CR7 is the exception to this who has looked after himself phenomenally well, but otherwise, for a buying club, Wilf will have less peak years the longer we hold on to him.

what pathetic reply defence is a unit losing AWB is not the end on our defence try playing there i have, our first season 48 goals,dont use the game has changed line that is very weak,very lacking in knowledge of the game,and AWB is so good Man u already looking at the norwich player instead

If the £55m-60m figure is true then I hope the board reinvests it wisely. No stupidly big money signings but shrewd quality signings where they're desperately needed. Although during pre-season I'd also like to see promising youngsters a chance to prove they deserve a chance in the first team this season too. Mostly Kirby.

I think Kirby should be getting a sniff.....I was also impressed by the little we saw of Sam Woods.

Only started 6 of his 11 games for Blackpool last season but most of his starts were towards the end of the season.Scored 1 goal.

Look out, another "I played right back for the dog and duck so I know best" post.

If you're going with the anti-logic of how good our defence was back then, why not go the whole hog?

We had Jim Cannon and Sansom back in 1979/80, we were ok then so we should be ok this season without AWB. What a load of tripe.

Interestingly, a talented full back left us at the end of that season and guess what happened the next season?

Nah he was a Mathias Sammer type sweeper. Excellent range of passing, strong, physical, but lacking a bit of pace.

I am no fan of Joel Ward but he can do a job back there. We didnt get relegated yet as far as I recall with Wardy playing right back.

This is good business from Parish if what I am reading is correct and the initial fee is over 50 mil.

The lad is absolute class but he is still not proven over season after season. That will come in time I am sure, but Parish is smart enough to know sometimes a player does go backwards instead of forwards with their development, and the hype dies down. He is still very young, and this is a lot of dosh.

End of the day we need the benjamins so this should allow us to keep Zaha now for sure for this season at least.

Before he got injured and couldn't win his place back from AWB thereafter Ward was on the wane in a big way. He's decent cover st RB for a handful of games a season, but he cannot be allowed to play 38 league games there, he'll be ripped apart.

AWB will need replacing. Add that to the 2 strikers and 2 attacking midfielders we already need.

55 million isn't enough to plug the gaps. Should've kept him another season.

55 million may not be enough to plug the gap but it's 55 million (less the cost of a new RB) more than we had if we hadn't sold him

We also have the net budget if we didn’t sell AWB and/or budget with amortisation spread over 4 seasons, with Zaha to add next season. But we also have financial concerns.

Whatever, it’s at least £110 mil to evolve the team because Wilf can’t play for ever.

I can see Clyne being loaned and a striker being loaned, free transfer goalkeeper, and maybe a young striker and midfielder being bought, that's if AWB is the only player going.

Personally I think Ward's days as a regular PL fullback are over. He is far, far too slow and when he filled in for AWB teams exploited this. He used to make up for his lack of pace with strong positioning but now it doesn't seem enough.


Whether we needed the money or not I'm just really disappointed that AWB appears to be leaving. He is class and strode around the pitch like a player who knew it. I'll really miss his ability to pick the pocket of the best wingers if he goes.

Clyne is now even money on oddschecker to join Palace, next best odds 16/1, last year of his contract at Liverpool, had some off field problems but a decent player, could do a lot worse. 10/12 million
