This will no doubt be a part of the 'turbulence' we will experience making that transition. Relying upon foreigners and 'brain drains' was and is never a good idea in the first place. We should be looking after and rewarding our own nurses first and foremost to ensure we retain them......Expediency as ever....knows no bounds.
Right. So this is a problem we will fix when? Increasing need and decreasing supply. Not enough people studying and not enough capability to increase the students. Maybe, if we really stretch, we can do something about it in ten years. And meanwhile? You say turbulence like it’s a minor short term issue. Get real. People’s lives depend upon this. Edited by Mapletree (26 Oct 2018 12.27am) The service should have been stretching a lot longer than ten years ago. Like I said, that's the folly of leaders and decisions made out of expediency. To leave yourself in a position where you rely on foreigners, especially in a country that has never been particularly pro EU is well ...well...actually it isn't that surprising, if my experience of managers in teaching is anything to go by, many a poor long term decision is made to produce short term results (and as s*** rolls downhill in reality those lower tier decisions are compromised). The service will adjust to fit the new dynamics. This isn't my field obviously but I imagine the 'turbulence' will result in a poorer service until budgets fit the new requirements.

Firstly the Royal College of Nursing have been trying for years to try and make nursing on a par with doctoring so have increased the entry qualification requirement to a university degree. Secondly the government has slashed the bursary paid to student nurses so that only the wealthy who can afford not to have an income for four years can train. My wife qualified as a staff nurse a dozen years ago but now without a university degree or the necessary funding she wouldn't be able to

I don’t know why anyone would do it nowadays; X years of studying and massive debts, just to start out working every hour of the day for £25k a year.

Apparently, over half the people she was to have trained with also packed it in!

Perhaps the high percentage of under 30’s who couldn’t be bothered to vote will wish they had now.

RMNs is a particularly extreme case To remind you, this is the Brexit Thread. What are we going to do? Melt down for years would be my guess. Good job none of us will need help then, eh? Or we take the good advice from our HOL friends, that would go well.

Those who came up with that requirement should never hold any responsibility on high level decisions again. You really don’t know what you are talking about on this. Stop digging.

Edited by Mapletree (26 Oct 2018 10.17am) Yes we did because we don't care about the future of young people in this country we are grumpy, selfish and stupid Brexiteers. On the other hand some of us may have voted to leave because we do care about this country and want to ensure that future generations will have a better life. Take your pick.

Or a third option, you know better than the silly feckless young people and need to ‘guide’ them. And as many of you don’t fully participate in the economy, with pension schemes invested overseas, you can make more objective decisions for those that will live with the effects.

Edited by Pussay Patrol (26 Oct 2018 10.44am) Well I certainly won't make 50 years if I am lucky maybe 30 years still I have put my money where my mouth is. My pension is not an annuity its a pot of investments from which I drawdown. If I am wrong I am in for a poor retirement. However I didn't vote to leave for economics or for immigration I voted for freedom. Freedom for our government to set its own budget and not have a EU civil service block it. Funny thing freedom we used to be proud of it in this country I guess its a dirty word today.

On balance, it pains me to say it, but the UK will not mourn the passing of my generation.
