There maybe a few Liverpool fans from the 70/80's that will argue with you. Probably the last club to actually do it.

I hope Roy stays a couple of seasons. Don't get me wrong, I'm really loving this season, because we have broken the records of all the crappest teams ever and we're out of the relegation zone. I'd like to see us progress, but I do feel that progress for us is to have what Stoke have had since they went up, which is stable and not really flirting with relegation.

Forgot to finish that with; I'd quite like to see Brendan Rodgers here. I think he would play the attractive football that Parish wants but without the De Boer ego.

I am not sure how viable succession planing actually is in the fast changing world of football and football management. You may have your eye on several candidates as possible replacements but it is not easy to tie one down for a future appointment, unless you recruit them as a second in command until the current incumbent goes. However, not many managers of any worth would be happy in that role. Successful managers like to keep their options open. There is of course nothing wrong with looking around at potential replacements but so much can happen between the time you start looking and when the post becomes vacant e.g another club snaps them up, or their fortunes take an alarming downturn no longer making them an attractive proposition. As a matter of interest, are there any recent examples out there of planned management succession by Premier League clubs?

Southampton. And it certainly doesn't hurt to use the dof's time in looking around rather than one Monday going, ''Oh fvck, we need a new manager. Who's out of work or making themselves available?''

Pellegrino had no previous connection with Southampton did he? They research their option be way in advance. About 2 years on players and certainly do on managers. We haven't.

It’s a ridiculous thread. Any excuse to start a topic. It’s pointless, it’s null. We should be thinking about plans WITH Roy, not planning for his retirement already. The bloke comes in changes things and people are talking about what to do when he’s gone. Could be 3 years yet, how are we supposed to predict what happens between now and then. What a shortsighted opinion. If we are not planning for our next managerial appointment already the board are complete muppets and have learned nothing from our recent managerial shambles'. They should have a plan a, b and c in place for when Roy departs whether that be at the end of this season, the next or the next. Any of those timelines are possible. I would struggle to support the board if we end up in another situation where we're manageress and no idea of what to do next.
