The commentary pointed out something which surprised me last night, (until Leicester beat Burnley) we were the highest scoring team in the PL outside the top 6. Imagine what we could do if one of our strikers could start scoring more regularly!

Our formation and style under Viera is not unlike Liverpool's and one of the early things Klopp did was move on Benteke. There are teams he will be better suited to Burnley been one that springs to mind. "Hello honky-tonks!"

In theory Benteke and Edouard should be ahead of Mateta in the pecking order.

Mateta seems to have that bit of selfishness, or to be kinder he takes responsibility for shooting, needed for a goal scorer - if a shot is on he takes it. When Clive Allen was at Tottenham he would shoot from the corner flag but he got 49 goals one season.

When Benteke came on yesterday it sadly exposed his shortcomings. He has no energy. He is very slow and lacks control on the ball. He doesn’t fit into the fast moving high press game we now pursue. This will surely be his last season with us. I’m sure in a different league at his age he could maybe squeeze a couple more seasons. But he has fallen noticeably short of the Premier pace which to be honest he hasn’t had since his Villa days.

Apart from one season (his first) Benteke has taken plenty from the club and given nothing in return. Held the club back with his over-inflated fee and wages. As all can see, when he comes on for 15 minutes he still can't be bothered to put in a shift. He'll be gone soon, and we have more than adequate replacements.

Mateta is fitting into the style of play more and more and is a lot more difficult to knock off the ball, unlike Tekkers and Edouard. Although I see a place for Edouard when the ball is at his feet in the box. You could see against Wolves Mateta links up well with players around him and you can see the other players like him.

Watching his goal back, his movement and desire is actually quite impressive. wins the header, and then peels off wanting Connor to go long to him, Wilf gets in and then JP sprints across the defender to make the move to the front post. I know it sounds simple, but without the movement, Wilf's cross is picked up by the keeper.

As well as being a decent passer when laying off to the midfield Mateta has become the best at pressing amongst the strikers. This effective pressure on the opposition when in possession was clear in both the Wolves and Watford wins.
I ain't got nuthin' funny to say. Sorry. |

The opening post i put on was and is still spot on

Funny isn’t it...all those who said he should be sent back to Mainz have gone a little quiet...wonder why.... Dougie has done a great job and got him for a steal of a price if he continues to knock them in....

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
