I've pointed out that inequality did widen, I've not claimed otherwise. I've also pointed out that's a bad thing and nothing has been done since Major to address the sharp rises in inequality seen under Thatcher. I didn't say you were. You have made points unrelated to mine seemingly in an effort to discredit the main point. I made a general point but never claimed all individual groups were worse off but you spent time making that point. You asked for evidence for the point I made, I provided it, the only argument is too the extent of the truth. You are the one who chose to debate the point. Have you lived in France? In what way have they shown us this? Denmark has much higher taxes and higher standards of living. Germany has higher taxes and higher standards of living and lower inequality. By a socialist government wrecking their economy. Garmany taxes aren't that different to our own...Isn't it about three percent more taken out of a salary last I looked. And as they treat the south of Europe as their personal consumer slaves, they have a large surplus. I don't know much about Denmark except that it only has three million workers are not in the Euro and have large mature oil and gas wells in the north sea and so have a trade surplus. When you have more coming in than going out....sure you can tax more.

One of my favourite things about this site is how old a lot of you lot sound when you try and make personal jibes. So thanks for that Stirling, I enjoyed it But seriously, the whole overcrowding thing is ridiculous to me. Samuel Pepys spent a lot of his diaries moaning about it, and that was 400 years ago! It always seems to be the fault of those damn immigrants, and never the fact that we as a society see more reason to cover our green and pleasant land with golf courses than houses and facilities. And of course, if people are reaaaally so annoyed about overcrowding, you always have the liberty to take yourself out of the crowd, and find another lovely corner of Albion to perch on. Cornwall's a lovely place, beautiful beaches. Or maybe the Lake District, if you can deal with the rain.

Yeah, I mean obviously an increase of around 13 million people since 1961 makes no difference at all. Lefty thinking. Life expectancy is longer

Anyone living in Britain in the last 400 years will have experienced population increase or movement but there is nothing to be gained from overcrowding, only friction and stress. The population in Pepys time was only 4 or 5 million. You could really disappear into the wilderness back then. Now you would have to risk life and limb to escape the masses.

Life expectancy is longer Odd then that the population was leveling out in the 70's and 80's before the rise of mass migration.

Presteigne, straddling the border between Wales and England, makes a virtue of its comparative remoteness. Cheap property, small streets and old-fashioned shop windows have attracted an array of people from outside the mainstream of life: gardeners, writers, a maker of clarinet reeds, and the like. There you go mate. Remote, small, old-fashioned. You could even take up the clarinet and play it at the arts festival.
