they literally call sting a musical genius when he is on shows over here. arrogant b****** laps it up; every second of it. i probably would too though so maybe i shouldn't be hard on him.

Just for you silvertop! [Link] In my opinion and as a teenager growing up with the dawning of "Punk Rock" it really wasn't about quality or ability it was so much more.I was lucky to see The Clash quite a few times over the course of 6 years and their gigs were among the best I've been to.But, as has been said,it's all about opinions, and to a greater degree, a generation thing and whatever bands were current when we were growing up and at our most impressionable. I can only really comment on bands I have a knowledge of, tho' not extensive, but enough to give a reasoned comment. So my 5 are: The Police and Sting, saw them unintentionally a couple of times and worst band ever, walked away from stage with many others much to Sting's dismay! U2,again support act to bands I went to see in '81 ish and actually got chucked out of gig when Bono stopped singing and summoned The Bouncers to get rid of me and some others! UB40 urgh! I'm gonna add Coldplay and Duran Duran. What was all that New Romantic shyte about? Ollie's Dad,Ash.

It was a mate who asked me to come. However, one of my other mates in the audience described them as the first and last word in rock before Joe came on. I was bemused by this as I always thought they were one of a number of bands around that time and one that did not even come close to the Pistols in terms of cultural impact; but all the others in the group agreed with him. How can a group that features so much of Mick Jones be anything but pony? Get him away from the mike and the writing and what a band they could have been. It is Joe's charity that is their undoing. I have revisited many acts who I disliked but who are supposed to be good to see the point. I saw it with Dylan and the Beatles. I was absolutely right with the Stones and Prince and [on a different level] Gang of Four - all awful. However, I am still, many years later, recovering from the headache that listening to London Calling gave me. Perhaps I should have another go this time with 'Rope?
