May 1 1957. Palace 1 Torquay 1. Torquay needed a win to get promoted from the old Third Division South (only one club went up in those days.) Crowd 22,000, lots up from Torquay. We all mingled together on the terraces where the Arfur is now - concrete bottom half, grass and mud top half. Palace finished 20th that season but put on a good show and a Torquay fan asked if Palace always played that well. The draw cost Torquay promotion and I have had a soft spot for them ever since - always look out for their result and I hope they get promoted in the Div 2 playoffs.

1st time I started looking out for Palace's results and looking at them in the table was around March 1977 when I was 10.

1st match I went to was with my Grandad on 30/08/77 against Southampton in the League Cup - result 0-0 (thank you history section for the date). I loved it, I was standing in the Holmesdale end. Please could anyone tell me if Alan Ball was playing for the Saints in this match?

I was going to go to the previous home match against Hull - result 0-1, but it was pouring with rain.

April 1969. Palace 3 Portsmouth 1. At the age of 12 just before promotion to the old First division for the first time.
My parents weren't really into football but my Uncles all supported Chelsea and used to drag me to Stamford Bridge and tried to drum Chelsea into me. I hated it and prefered watching Sutton United. My first trip to Selhurst got me hooked and I eventually managed to persuade Mum and Dad to come along. Mum got hooked as well and was a fanatic until she died in 1991. She was always in love with Big Mal! There is a brick in the wall for her on the outside of the Old Stand. Dad was never that fanatical and gave up after Mum died. But my lads now love going along when they get down from Crouch End and Warrington (Cheshire). We moved to Leicestershire in 1989 and my wife and I still do the trip up and down the M1. I hate the journey but still love going to Palace. The experience is brilliant.
Chelsea or Palace? I made the right decision.

My Dad took me to Selhurst Park for the first time on Christmas Day 1945.The Second World War had ended a few months before which had caused the various leagues to be reorganised on a regional basis so as to reduce travelling time to matches. Palace was in rhe Southern League which included most of the southern teams from the second and third divisions. On that particular morning, they kicked off at 11.00am.Palace had a lot of guest players still playing for them as part of the wartime arrangements whereby players could play for any club near to their base camp. We had Jackie Stamps playing for us who later played for England and Derby County and Dick Graham who had played for Leicester City signed on for us that morning and played for us in goal for several years and eventually became manager at the Palace. On that morning we beat Aldershot 6 - 0 and I was hooked for the rest of my life. I have seen all the ups and downs at Selhurst for 65 years and my saddest moment was a few months ago when I thought Palace was going into extinction, thank God Steve Parrish came along just in time. So now I believe anything can happen at Selhurst Park and don't panic yet about our current position in the table.

Beat that.

February 1964 - Palace v Colchester on dull grey day. Sat in the old stand with my dad watching a 0-0 draw. Obviously that didn't put me off. We went on to win promotion and I was there to celebrate? a 3-1 to defeat to Oldham on the last day of the season. Coventry led by the bearded chinster won the title.

I was there that day. I used to sell the "jackpot tickets" on the Whitehorse end in those days for pocket money. ( free entry to game as well!)

Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link]

August 1 1970 - Palace 4 St Mirren 0 in a pre-season friendly.

Now I don't have to tell you good folks what's been happening in our beloved little town. Sheriff murdered, crops burned, stores looted, people stampeded, and cattle raped. The time has come to act, and act fast. I'm leaving.

Was a 7yo Man U fan in '72 - I am Robert, called Bobby as a boy, so big fan of Bobby Charlton, who missed the game at Selhurst in December which was my first game. Dad left early so missed our fifth goal (Don Roger's second). Two weeks later I came out the closet a claret and blue 8yo glazier. We lost the return 2-0 at Old Trafford at Easter. Loser both times. Je ne regrette rien.

August 1963. I was 8, we were living in Herne Hill and my dad had no idea where Selhurst Park was. Four buses and three hours later we arrived-at half time.

We went and sat in something called a stand, which I just couldn't get to grips with. I had missed three goals, all scored by Palace, so burst into tears. 'Don't worry son' says my dear pater ' the other side are obviously rubbish so Palace are bound to score another three or four'.

Yep, I should have known then! Palace sat back and Mansfield pulled a goal back near the end-a penalty. This was my first live game so I'd never seen a penalty before. It looked impossible to miss and I still can't really understand why professional footballers miss 'em.

To cap it all a disgruntled away fan ran on the pitch at the final whistle and kicked the ref!
