Hy Money just posted some pics of Palace hero Dave Swindlehurst on Facebook. Seeing them brought back many memories, not least his goal in the famous Burnley 1979 game.

Hy has kindly given me permission to re-post them here. Have a look too and give us your memories of Swindle.

Here he is in his heyday:

He was crap the first few seasons. So bad, in fact, that my dad refused to call him by his name but gave him the moniker 'carthorse' instead. The El Tel weaved his magic and we had some player on our hands. Not a great goalscorer but a perfect fit for the wonderful footballing team we had in '79.

I loved Swindle and got totally fed up with those fans that were always on his case.

He was a bit raw to start with and could trip over his own feet or score a blinder.

Eventually he got it spot on and wasn't afraid of a scrap either.

Some fella used to stand behind me on the Holmesdale and shout out "You're a handbag Swindlehurst" all the time. One Saturday afternoon I had enough and offered him out. He bottled it and shut up about Swindlehurst after that.

Swindle scored the best goal in the 4-1 win over Ipswich for me, it was a scissors kick type volley from the edge of the box that flew in the Holmesdale goal.... fantastic goal, fantastic day, fantastic player.

I was gutted when he left.

Totally agree with all that!

One that sticks in my mind was his glancing header at Old Trafford in 79/80 to put us 1-0 up.
The poor referee had to give them 6 or 7 minutes of stoppage time to get an equaliser, then promptly blew for time.
Another fantastic goal, another fantastic day, same fantastic player!

Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link]

Swindles best moment for me was when he scored the winner in the 4th round against Leeds at Elland Road in 1976. This was the Leeds of Billy Bremner etc. Leeds were 4th in league, we were top of 3rd div.

The 70's era was a fantastic time to support the Palace & DS was a big part of that. He was one of the team that came into hospital to see me in 75 & I met him at the POTY party a couple of years ago & showed him Hy Moneys pictures from the visit. We have both put on a bit of weight since then!

I can remember him coming back to Selhurst after he went to Derby and he got a mahoosive ovation from the Palace fans.

Then he went and scored the only goal of the game

I was there too. The goal was at our end and Bailey was their keeper. Flanagan played the ball out to Hilaire who crossed for Swindlehurst. I recall Joe Jordon equalising but what a fantastic day out that was.
