No old money in the Hurst...

Charles De Gaulle's former residence at the corner of Chislehurst Road and Birchwood Road looks rather impressive !

Commons debate just starting...will be interesting to see who is the first MP to break ranks. My money is on Dennis (Skinner, not Thatcher).

You're quoting the Mail and saying the Beeb is biased?

The BBC should of course be impartial.
In many of the television and radio news bulletins it appeared that Margret Thatcher was on trial and the case for the prosecution was gathering force.

To show Thatcher was anything other than a bitchc*** would be biased.

.....awaits link from The Ciabatta Bread famine of Chislehurst circa 1987....

Was there? Pray tell me about it Quentin Crisp.

Nick - I can't really be bothered to read all of this but do you really live in the 'workers paradise' of Chislehurst?

Indeed Matt...

That is one of the funniest things I have ever read on this site.

Yep, I got a key worker grant towards my mortgage. Thanks Tony.
Is there a problem with a socialist living in a Tory area?

No not at all. I wouldn't mind one of these though...http://www.chislehurst.co.uk/property/#/requested_page=1&sort_order=ASC&sort_by=price&i=1

It's absolutely effing hilarious.

You, berating Thatcher and the Tory's, yet adopting Tory values and taking what you can in 'leg ups' in order to join the aspirational classes.

Enjoy your trip to Chiselhurst Strada.

Buying a house because the repayments are cheaper than exorbitant rents was a necessity rather than adopting Tory values.

Fred the Weatherman from This Morning, arrested in regards to four complaints.

HANG HIM!

Thatcher was a c**t. Even my mum hated her, and I've never heard her say that about anyone!

She sold off our industry and spunked the money.

What industry? we were sodding well bankrupt (all but)!

Yes she privatised British Gas etc but that's hardly selling off our industry. British Steel was shagged with Labour only keeping Steel works open for political reasons.

You make me laugh, you moan about people believing the media but all you post is soundbites

Public debt in the 80's was below 50% of GDP, the EU set the maximum at 60% when Thatch signed the Maastricht treaty in 92, so by European terms we were well within acceptable limits. Hardly bankrupt. In fact, we embarked on building the welfare state when our debt was 247% of GDP after ww2, so that is a weak argument.

1970s
IMF Crisis - .9 Billion
Devaluation of the pound - potential .9 billion loan from the yanks
three day week
Power cuts
Red Robbo £200 million in lost production due to walkouts in a little over a year.
British Steel haemorrhaging money - over £800 million during the 70s, but that's OK because it kept the northerners happy.

Yep, evertything was just dandy when maggie took over.

But as you rightly say Nick in the 80s things were much better, I am glad that you acknowledge that

We were not bankrupt, which was your assertion.

If you read it correctly I also put (all but)

All but isnt even close though is it? Historically our debt to GDP ratio was (and still is) a lot lower than it has been for the last 250 years. So even to say all but bankrupt is complete tosh. The same bankrupt lie is being peddled by politicians of all parties now.

No it's not. We were a basket case, no one wanted to know us, if the unions hadn't been so intransient (sound familiar) Maggie wouldn't have had to or been able to be as aggressive in her approach.

I can't believe that you cannot accept that we were completely and utterly in the s***.

the dignified don't even enter in the game
