Risking death to make a better life sure trumps some kind of citizenship test. Such bravery and determination does not wash away as soon as they reach shore. I'm not saying any country should be forced to accept these people, just that they display traits that are enviable.

I am not sure the risks are completely understood by those making the journey. I think that manipulators make the journey seem easy and risk free - in return for a fat fee the desperate souls cannot afford.

This is the one thing that for the life of me I've never understood. Why do people pay extortionate amounts of money to these slave traders when in effect all they have to do is buy an airline ticket and book a hotel say in Europe (or the USA If they are coming in from South/Central America)and overstay there Visa???

Cos Easyjet don't work out of Africa Asia and the Middle East.

Is that a stab at humour? I should Imagine most countries have budget airlines flying to Europe. That aside who the f*** pays 00s to sail across the Mediterranean when you can pay 0s just to fly ??

I presume there are visa checks at the other end and they won't actually let you board without the relevant paperwork? Just a guess, mind, I'm not sure.

Usually because refugees generally are fleeing, they don't have passports and documentation, and usually are somewhat reluctant to risk the security checks and cross references required when buying tickets at an airport, in said oppressive regime.

Which is why they tend to pay more to traffickers, than it would normally cost to get out of the country, so they can avoid the border patrols.

I haven't got time to read all that. It's your point, you read them and pass on the information.

To say that "we" rape, torture and kill asylum seekers is one of the stupidest posts I have ever read. "we" put some of them in detention centres while they're processed. They're housed and fed and the bullying, I dare say, is from other asylum seekers.

So you ask for my 'proof' then immediately dismiss it and say I should just summarise? Right...

The fact is that 'we' know from these journalistic enquiries (which I do recommend reading - they are very eye-opening) that abuse is rife within detention centres, particularly for women and the LGBT community, who make up a fairly sizeable proportion of asylum seekers. There have been enquiries in to the running of these detention centres and changes have been made, so fewer children are kept indefinitely, but because the companies running the detention centres are private and non-accountable, they haven't got the obligation to be as transparent as a public institution, and the number of these places is only increasing. Day to day life is clearly hellish, hence the large accounts of suicide, and the fast-track justice service given to these people isn't doing the job.

Also considering you are keen for me to show my evidence, where's your evidence for your last claim? If I didn't suspect better I'd guess you'd just pulled it out of your arse...

True up to a point I suppose, but then again not all people trying to flee from these places are under the yoke. Most are simply economic refugees. I have friends here from places ranging from Guinea to Guatemala who simply hopped on an aircraft and overstayed their visa

That's not proof, it's a load of links to wade through.

You said this is happening so you should be able to easily post one categorical fact about asylum seekers that "we" British have killed, raped or tortured.

"Nearly half of immigrants held in Brook said that they had been victimised by other detainees" Not so hard is it.

Read the links! A man with chest pains has a heart attack after being neglected for 15 minutes in a detention centre. The interview with Aderonke Apata talks about sexual and physical abuse in Yarl's Wood. Homosexuals are being sent back to countries where it is outlawed and often punishable by death or torture. Sure, we aren't lining people against a wall and shooting them in the head but these examples are almost as bad, in that it shows a wanton negligence from our authority, turning a blind eye to the treatment felt by the most powerless and in need in our society.

Stuk, I have one question: do you think we can and should do more to help these people than we currently are?

I don't have the time, nor the inclination. When you asked I found the specific answer. Someone having a heart attack isn't killing someone, nor is turning down their claim and/or deporting them.

Feeding and housing them is almost as bad as shooting them in the head... okay...
