I think it ludicrous that these demonstrations happen before the Queens Speech. At the moment what these demostrators are saying is that the participants disagree with the election result. It therefore has no legitimacy as the agenda of the new government has not been formalised. However, instead of having demonstrations, why don't these protesters form a single political group, with a manifesto that matches their views, and then campaign to be elected as a political party? A gathering of more than 1 person is an assembly.
A gathering of more than one person in a single location is an assembly. Protest assemblies are different from marches because the organisers do not have to notify the police. The police do still have the right to impose conditions on an assembly, but only if they feel they are necessary to prevent serious public disorder from taking place, or if they feel that the purpose of the gathering is to intimidate others. The police are entitled to amend the location of an assembly, limit the number of attendees and shorten the duration of any protest.

Majority of the placards were emblazoned with 'Socialist Worker', a party whose policies would create a North Korean style worker's paradise that would make 'austerity' seem like a golden age.

People are entitled to peaceful protest - we did when we were close to going out of business and I have no problem with that. However daubing 'Tory Scum' in red paint on a war memorial feels a bit, well, scummy to me. I imagine some leftie apologist will tell me that they were provoked into writing that or even that it was a big conspiracy and a Tory voter wrote it, whilst the protesters were busy hurting the police (some of the very people who are actually directly affected by the austerity measures these people claim to be protesting about), in order to get them negative publicity.

What do they expect to achieve from all this? Looks like the Socialist worker nutters getting all the students and great unwashed together for a bit of anarchy. Sad and pathetic if there is one thing the lefties hate its democracy when it doesn't go their way.
